Does anyone know what the strategy for slug control is?

I'm wondering specifically if it's a case of controlling the population in the whole garden if you have a moderate sized garden, or simply to try and keep them away from vulnerable plants with bait etc?

Slug feature on gardeners world tonight. Maybe they have the answer!

If they have they should patent it. Fast.

I'm afraid with both slugs and snails there is no cure - only control.

One of the little bar stewards ;) was in my kitchen this morning. Barf!
Since moving to this house we've had dozens and dozens outside but this is the first indoor one. Feel sick now. _pale_

Anyone know how or where the over winter, do the big ones survive or just eggs or whatever?
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

All my slugs and snails get thrown in the River Tweed at the bottom of my garden, I think (hope) the ducks like them.

My apologies to gardeners in Berwick if they can swim!

I weeded the hedge I planted earlier this year, and the huge slugs I found were thrown onto the road. I imagine you could hide some in the green matter you take to the local tip. The high temperature composter would I assume kill them.

Apparently some do overwinter, some don't, so I guess eggs continue the species. According to a quick Google anyway.

A word of caution. Tempting though it may be, do not eat raw slugs. They can cause serious illness. One chap ate two raw slugs as a bet, and ended up in hospital with near fatal meningitis.

Apparently they can be the hosts for some nasty parasites that infect people in some parts of the world. Not sure about the UK though.

I have a bucket with rainwater and chuck S&S in there as I find them. They have the option to crawl out if they are fit !
I have noticed that in one of my raised beds that seems infested with red ants, I haven't had slug damage, though I do find snails. The Rocket spuds I grew here ( the haulms died down way earlier than I expected) I left for about 3 weeks and didn't anticipate much harvest but it was abundant by my standards.
I've now got Swiss chard and turnip in there, grown from seed, and apart from Mr Blackbird having a good root around and disrupting my tidy rows, it is looking O.K.
Could red Ants be a deterent to slugs ?
