Use of the van is not exactly mileage. If they didn't have access to one cheaply, they shouldn't really have offered delivery.
    Agreed.

If they put mileage fee on the listing and are now charging a mileage fee plus fee for a van then it may be possible to claim it's significantly not as described.

Similarly if the fee is unreasonable then a similar claim may be possible. However I can't see the distance of the delivery on any postings so the fee may be more than reasonable.

People often get stung with offering delivery. They give vague details - 'within a reasonable distance' and then get a buyer's idea of a reasonable distance. One seller who posted angrily to the community boards about 'timewasters' envisaged cycling with a guitar on his back to deliver but got offers from buyers who expected him to be able to drive further with it.

I'd always ask but sellers should really be a bit more precise. It's all very well to say 'should have checked' but I suspect seller wanted the bids too much and thought that stating up front that they were intending to charge for the van might put people off.

When people learn to be clear, accurate and concise on eBay listings, it will be a much better place to shop all round.

I'm not sure about the exact distance as the seller hasn't given me their address (so I'm not sure how they expected me to collect it!). Using google maps the distance from Wakefield to my flat is 14 miles, so it won't be more than 20 miles altogether.

I've got some courier quotes and they are a bit cheaper, but it leaves the problem of the seller wanting cash not paypal.

Advice here seems a bit mixed between they could get a NPB strike or I could have a case for not as described.

As I said, I suggested a mutual cancellation but they wern't happy with that, maybe if I explain that I'll have to pay by Paypal then they'll agree as it'd be cheaper to offer it to the second highest bidder than pay the fees. I'm not sure how to word it though?

No-one would expect to pay a van hire fee to a seller who offered delivery for a reasonable mileage fee- mileage is just that, not a car hire as well.
Mutual cancellation would be best really, but you could also look on Anyvan .com as there are sometimes drivers with returning empty vans who do small loads for a cheap price- i used them a few times and was very pleased with the service. The seller can also not insist Afaik, on cash- they have to offer paypal as part of being able to sell on ebay, so they cannot prevent you using paypal whether they like it or not, unless they choose to accept a mutual cancellation.

Thanks, I put it up on anyvan last night and I've got a few quotes which are less than the £30.

What is the price on the invoice, I take it the £10 and the £20 were not on there.
The seller cannot prevent you from paying by paypal, so if you wish to back out of the sale because of their excessive demands then pay the invoice by paypal.
Then you can ask for a refund or open INR case to get your money back and not get a NPB strike.
And of course you would then be able to leave feedback.

pay by paypal - and get anyone else to collect it....

even if it costs the same they sound like a right pain in the bottom to me... and they shouldn't profit like that.

that way they have to pay ebay fees and cannot open a NPB case (and I'd personally be negging them for the postage rip off) (well neutral any way I've only ever left on neg and that took an actual threat.... ).

We charge £1 a mile [50p each way].

At the end of the day, you should have checked delivery costs with the seller before bidding & you cannot mention it in the feedback, as its collection only & the price has been mutually agreed between you & the seller

Might not get a strike but do not have the item either!
Have you tried sending an assembled bookcase for less than a tenner?
You ever been to Ikea? They don't sell em assembled.

You can mention it in the feedback. It's factual and relevant.
