Okay personally I think this guy (whether he was a police officer or not) crossed the line. I would never dream of putting plain pieces of paper in the slot, although I too (Like many of you) have been aware of this loophole for some time.

At the same time Tesco are not whiter than white. Reading this article to me shows just what type of thing goes on in the background.

In my local Tesco and Morrisons stores they actually check the receipts to see if you have bought the product - I guess the best thing would be to find the cheapest manufacturers product and then use the rest off my shopping..

    Thanks for your reply!!X

Bad luck! But I had thought this was the case as I was turned down in tesco by a couple of cashiers so I stopped asking . Then I tried again with a few different cashiers and discovered that actually it was the first ones who were the exceptions rather than the rule. General advice is to head for the young male of the species as they often don't care.
I know there are some stores that operate this kind of policy even though Tesco have a national policy of accepting them.My Asda is like this, even though lots aren't and its really annoying.

154 transactions in two months...that's more than 2 every single day...

and 750 ready meals in 3 days....the size of the trolley alone he's not exactly hidding,

isn't it a bit odd they didn't question him in Tesco ?

There's nothing stopping anyone from buying as many meals as they want he never did any thing wrong here.

Tesco normally limit things like this to a max of ten per customer.

I'm sure if Tesco where happy to sell him 750 ready meals then he was happy to pick up the points, as an avid point collector myself I jump at the loopholes if I spot them but Never NEVER NEVER get greedy, what the hell would you do with 750 ready meals you would need to buy a new freezer to put them in then where is the saving in that.....

In fact the same loophole was hi-lighted here on MSE by Martin last year.

I wonder if he's a member of this site.....

To read more about how the loophole worked thenclick on or copy and paste this link it goes into more detail:

i must admit i'm a little sympathetic towards the cop. It seems he simply got a little carried away with things.

I do think the whole story does Tesco no favours at all. If they were inept and incompetent enough to let it go on, then that's their fault.

Personally, i think Tesco are equally as guilty for blatently ignoring the problem and then resorting to calling the police because they can't be bothered to actually do something about it. Granted they obviously wanted to make an example of him, but they could have easily banned him from all their stores and cancelled his clubcard.

I think it's a complete and utter waste of public funds to prosecute him for this. From reading the story in several papers, it seems Tesco had ample opportunity to do something about it, and yet didn't and so i think it's fairer to assume they had no issue with it (indeed i'm sure he would probably have stopped if someone had actually spoken to him at the start) - so i don't see why a prosecution was in the public interest.
