Adoption

Hi, we are in the early stages thinking about adoption.

Where do you start? Has anybody got any experiences?

We have a 5 year old little boy already and a loving family, not without its problems but a good home x

No experiences of adoption, but I'm a foster carer currently looking after 2 little ones who we are hoping to move on to adoption once we've done some therapeutic work with them ("we" being DH and I, social workers, child psychologist and various healthcare professionals). Due to severe neglect they are miles behind where they should be developmentally, plus have various other issues due to the environment they were in. Adoption at this stage would almost certainly break down within a short time, in part because it's difficult to assess their needs at first, so matching with suitable parents would just be a stab in the dark, but hopefully in a year or so they'll be able to accept a new "forever family".

There are hundreds of children like this, not without their problems, but still able to become a much loved and loving member of a family and reach their potential, so please consider the slightly older children as well as the babies.

Hi honey, thank you for your post, I really appreciate hearing any experiences. I know for our family that a child of under our natural child's age (5) would only work.

Just because of my son and the way he is. This is going to be a difficult challenge but one that we are really looking forward to. x

by the time you get through the process your son could be 8 or 9, so you could adopt an older child but still a younger sibling.

my friend has just adopted though the council and from the first enquiry until placement has taken 4 years - worth the wait as she is now mum to a lovely toddler but its been a long road - training courses, assessments of them all individually and as a family, references, approval panels, matching panels and all though the child is now living with them its not yet been through the final court process

Yet you just had to throw in your irrelevant, obnoxious, pointless little dig, simply for the sake of being nasty. Cute.

You are nastier than I am, honey.

    Could you explain?

Please don't use the expression "natural child" - will an adopted child be unnatural?

Cut her some slack, she's only just looking into this, its all new and I'm sure she'll get the hang of using the appropriate language soon.
