When to declare a disability?

According to my advisor at Shaw Trust the Employment Law since 1998 has made it mandatory to include a section on every application form which says-
do you consider yourself to have a disability
and
do you require any extra help with your work?
or words to that effect.
You see I don't tell anyone that I am disabled, I would rather not. The guy at ST said that the question MUST be there on the form and that I MUST declare that I am in receipt of DLA so that the employer complies with employment law and so that any extra changes at work are complied with, as per the law.0 -
I think I can do this job as it does not look high pressured or management. It is about organising things and setting things up which I can do.
I can get there on the bus straight from my house if I go at 7am and it is a sector I want to be, so I really eally want it.:beer:0 -
great, end of thread then! next question?0

Thank you for replying. I had not been aware of that requirement and so I've asked ST to see if I can track it down - then I can quote it.
Thanks again.0 -

I find it hard to believe that some where like where I am applying has illegal forms because it has a large legal dept and a HR dept with many Grad. IPD so they must be well schooled in the law on these matters.:beer:0 -

Shameless, sorry, and not getting at you at all, but I don't believe that your advisor is correct in this. Disability and employment is my line of work and I have never heard of this as a legal requirment. The Direct Gov website outlines helpful information about the declaration of a disability to a prospective employer.
Hope this helps,

Neither had I - which is why I've emailed Shaw Trust.
Their website doesn't say that it is mandatory to have the question on application forms so I think they wanted to say that it was a legal requirement that employers should make reasonable adjustments during employment and during the recruitment process and that therefore someone with a disability which would require an adjustment should ensure that this was made known to the employer.0 -

You are probably right!
In my interview with ST he said "what did you put where it asks do you have a disability" and I said "that question wasn't there". He replied that the logo and the question HAD to be there by law. He fished out a Company's application form and showed me the logo that it has to have and the question.
All I said was "how am I supposed to answer the question when it isn't there in the first place?".
I have no idea! I have been self-employed for over 23 years, all this applying for jobs is new territory to me!
When you find out, please let me know!0
