When to declare a disability?

Sorry, you posted the answer before I posted.
OK phil, listen, a degree is a degree - doesn't matter what it is, you will probably get (if you revise for your finals) a good BA - a philosophy degree is fine. Whatever you job is you will gain experience and you will probably be able to get further training on the job. Stop looking for problems that aren't there. Philosophy has done your head in I think - what if ....!!!0 -
You haven't said what degree you are doing, or is it a secret - BA? When do your finals begin? If you have a good degree there is no need for you to take up another - why are you thinking of looking at OU 2008 now?!
One minute you are desperate for a job you fancy, you apply for other jobs at the same time worrying about how many job applications you will have to apply for before you get a job offer, and if you don't get offered a job then it must be that you are being discriminated against because of your disability!
My finals are at end May.
I want this university job, but my thinking is that come a year's time I don't have a suitable job that I might need to look at some PG vocational and part time to boost my chances-- this is only back up plan.:beer:0 -
I really do not want to have to set about doing another course really. I am open to doing something really job related if I need. But I would like a change and a rest from studying if possible because I would like to live my life a little bit now.:beer:0

Why are you thinking of in a year? Why send off for OU for 2008 now? (Unless you have to) What about this second!0

Im disabled. Im Manic Depressive (bi polar if you prefer...) under control although sectiond several times; but managed to hold down a demanding job for 15 years as a community psychiatric nurse before being thrown in hospital and locked in. Turned my life around and bought up 2 kids one a classical musician at 15 yrs old on violin and piano so done something right
But i am still disabled, and I am not ashamed or give a stu** who knows; why should I hide it on application forms??
There loss.
Unfortunatly the way society is ; will i ever get the chance to be offered a meaningful job again due to all judgemental, ill informed idiots around....
So where does that leave me on benefits with "society" moaning at me for doing so.
Give me/ offer me a job and I will grab it and put in 110%
But no one will as on form they read my honesty as "DISABLED" and change it round to "USELESS WASTER".
Sound negative, but been there experienced it....0 -

I am looking now because if I did decide to do it you do have to apply a few months before it starts and plus I want an idea of things like courses costs and they will take time to plan how I might afford it and to just see what the taster reading is.:beer:0 -

I am sorry you have not had more success, however, surely there must be a way for you to find a meaningful job somehow, have you gone down all the relevant employment charities that have been named here? I am assuming you will have tried the DWP if you are no disability benefits.:beer:0 -
Jan
Sorry to hear of your difficulty in finding a meaingful job.
I wondered what jobs you were looking at and whether you have ever formally challenged an employer on why you have not been selected.0 -

So I am getting plans in place to boost that CV even more and I am looking on Reed and Monster everyday for jobs.
Plus, I am going to get in touch with the DWP helpline.
Phil they are a total waste of time. In the main they are looking for people with experience of the job role - which you haven't got. They want people whom are qualified and experienced, that is why it is sent out to Recruitment Agencies in the first place.
Go to the job centre website where you will have a lot more success.

Cheers, there are a few jobs of those sites but each time I have sent my CV for one I have never so much as had an email.:beer:0
