    In my local post office they don't even talk to you just sit there in silence until they need to ask you a question.

    It's the same when I go into my local co op only tell you how much your shopping is. I find it quite rude.

    I speak to our customers regular make sure everything is good it's not hard to put on a smile and be polite with people.

    A jobsworth in my local village post office refused to pay a dividend cheque for the princely sum of £6.50 into our joint account. The reason, it was difficult to make out the initial of my husband's first name, everything else was fine.

    This resulted in us having to return the cheque to the sender (International Power), along with a copy of my husband's birth certificate.

    A month or so later we also received a cheque from the same company, addressed in exactly the same way, for over £500. We paid this into a Nationwide account, with no problems at all.

    We are still waiting for IP to reissue the £6.50 cheque all because of Mrs Jobsworth at our local PO.

    So, an employee is chatting away when they should be doing their job - hardly polite to the ten plus customers waiting patiently in the queue. Then, they are deliberately awkward and attempt to enforce a fabricated rule regarding photographic id.

    I don't believe that this was a mistake, collection of a Parcel Force item is surely a common task so you would expect the staff to be pretty familiar with the rules. When I asked to speak to the supervisor the staff member informed me that she was the most senior member of staff who I would expect to be au fait with the rules.

    I did feel like a bit of a nightmare customer, not because if the way I treated the member of staff (which was polite but assertive) but because I felt partially responsible for introducing a further delay to everyone behind me in the queue.

    Minimal disruption. I wonder why?


    Could it have something to do with my picking up my passport as ID as a matter of course if I have a parcel to collect/if I could be in a situation where I am likely to have to produce ID? Rather than arguing about it?

    Because you have pre-empted the jobsworth in your local post office by bringing an indisputable form of identification and you are able to go to the post office at a quiet time :)
  • my local PO. what can i say, umm. large cue, mainly due to the fact, that the counter staff are talking amoungst themselfs not looking what they are doing or paying attention to the customer count.

    i honestly dont what to know about the night out she had friday when her mate got totalled, she got drunk as skunk, and ended up in bed with a minger! who had the penis the size of a pea and balls the size of golfballs, and cant remeber what his face looked like YUK!!!.

    It's because PO staff such as the one mentioned in the OP are actually quite rare and you haven't encountered one.

    It's already be ascertained that she did not know the rules and was entirely in the wrong.

    You can give yourself a pat on the back for being a smug twit who is so submissive to authority that she regularly goes to unnecessary lengths to perform simple tasks just in case someone exceeds their authority in which case you can meekly comply.

    But it's nothing to boast about.

    ironically i don't believe a passport is an accepted form of ID as it doesn't have your address on it.

    I think there is a bit of confusion on this post because the collection was from the Post Office for a Parcelforce item not a Royal Mail Item. If you collect a Royal Mail Item you need one of these forms of ID

    Cheque guarantee/credit/debit card
    Bank/building society book
    Valid passport
    Cheque book
    Driving licence
    Photo Identity Card (Foreign National, Military, Police Warrant, Royal Mail Employee)

    The OP did not have any of these forms of ID which may be why the Postal Staff worker initially refused to hand over the parcel. The OP correctly queried this as he was collecting a Parcelforce item which appears to have different proof of identity requirements.

    I believe it was a genuine mistake on the post office's staff members part and not sure she deserves to be labelled a "Jobsworth".
