Hi Rachel
I did say I’d reply to you so here goes.
Firstly apologies for taking so long to do so, it’s not nice to keep people waiting for an expected reply and it’s not normally something I do, I’ve been busy and sometimes not in the right frame of mind, so apologies once more.rachel_belmont wrote: »Your message was rejected because you don't live in the area covered by that group AND you didn't include the fact that you'd already posted it to local groups. I do try to check but with nearly 10,000 members I can't check all the time.
You’re quite right I do not live in the area covered by the group you moderate , however I do work in an area covered by your group and indeed one of my earliest offereds was taken by someone close to where I work - I didn’t even take a detour to meet the guy as my normal journey home passed where he lived , but you already know that as that was in my reply to your rejection of my post.rachel_belmont wrote: »As for me having "neither the courage or common human decency to reply", maybe if you'd have written a polite message to me instead of a mega-rant I might have replied.
When I read this I stopped and thought “Hmmm I was probably a little agitated on receiving the rejection and may have been just a little aggressive” So I decided to see if I still had the message in my sent items and luckily I had - I reread it (and just have again before typing this bit of my reply on here) and am at a loss how any human being could , by the most extreme stretch of the imagination, consider what I wrote as a rant, mega or otherwise.
I merely expressed what I was unhappy with in the rejection of my offered, why I felt that action was ill judged and some areas that sour my perceptions, and as you will see in this thread that of others, in SOME ASPECTS of the Freecycle experience.
Additionally had you, instead of just outright rejecting my post (btw less than 24 hours too soon – your rejection said it should be left 3 days before posting in an alternate group, it had been very roughly 2 and a half days earlier that I had posted it more locally), asked for a little more information from me and why I was posting in a group you considered inappropriate , then we might have had a more mutually pleasant interaction.rachel_belmont wrote: »What did I assume wrongly?? You live in an area not covered by the group I run.
What did you assume wrongly ? In your rejection you asked that I join my local group and that I post the item there. Hence you assumed:
I was not already a member of the group you asked I join – I am and have been for some time.
That I hadn’t offered it there first – I had approx 2 and half days earlier.rachel_belmont wrote: »And please tell me, all these things you're stating you've seen requested on the group who've dared to reject your message......I can quite confidently say you've never seen these things asked for on my group!
I’m prepared to take your word on that Rachel – I did think that I could search the group, or my wanteds folder, but then I thought “lets get a sense of perspective here – this is an on-line difference of opinion , how much time do I really want to put into this.rachel_belmont wrote: »If these people asking for things on Freecycle offends you all so badly then maybe you should all reconsider your memberships.
You’ve already had a couple of replies to this point from other posters in this thread and all I want to say is that on the whole the concept of Freecycle is a great one and keeping things out of landfill and maybe slowing consumerism , even if only a little, can only be a good idea.
It’s only a small amount of people who ask for certain types of items that is souring the experience for some of us – if you have read through this thread and kept up with it you will have seen that I am far from the only one who feels this way.
Ok that’s your points answered and I’d now just like to make a few more of my own.
I would like to ask just what would have been so bad in passing my post ? I ended up getting no takers from the 2/3 groups I offered them on and the items ended up going in the bin. Is it not possible that maybe, just maybe someone from your group might have been interested and been not far from my place of work ? If so they could have been saved from landfill – what Freecycle is about. Of course we can’t know if there would have been interest or not,, BUT what harm would it have done in passing the post ?
I’d like to float some thoughts on the whole concept of offering to nearest groups.
Making an assumption of my own here, I suspect that the reason the Freecycle movement want folks to do this is to minimize the impact on the environment (it is after all a green movement) I can understand and strongly support this – on one of my offered posts I asked folk to let me know roughly how far they lived from my area and roughly how long it would take them to get to me. The biggest part of my decision making process was going to be how close they lived to me (I gifted it to someone who lived 3 mins drive from me and who’s home I passed within 30 seconds anytime I visited my father, and I therefore delivered to them the next time I did visit my father)
What this doesn’t always take into account is that where one lives isn’t the only factor to take into account. Acouple of genuine examples I would like to mention are:
The one I have already mentioned where I offered an item and the guy lived on my route home – 16 Miles from where I live and yet no additional environmental impact – yet this might at 1st glance seem wrong – offering something in a group that is 16 miles from where I live – but where we work is also a factor.
The item I mentioned earlier that I delivered - someone showed interest in it and they lived further than at least 4-6 of the other interested parties …BUT he , weekly, travelled on his motorcycle to a pub that is literally at the end of my road and again had I gifted to him there would have been no additional environmental impact.
Things aren’t always as clear cut as they seem.. I feel that maybe more credit should be given to members that they make sound ,sensible decisions and choose recipients wisely using sound judgements and good criteria.
Another thing to ponder – the item I gifted to the guy near where I work (A PC monitor) had only the recipient showing any interest had this post been rejected (this was in your group strangely enough – maybe you weren’t moderator then) it would have ended up in landfill !!!
I’m now getting to the end of my response (it is getting to 23:13 so time I went to bed).
I do wonder, Rachel, What your motivation was in your post in this thread , on this site ? Why not just email me directly ? I note you have just two posts on MSE – so you clearly came on here just to have a pop at me. In fairness I didn’t mention which of my local groups I was talking about as I wanted to preserve some anonymity at your end (even if I was unhappy with the rejection of my post) .
Anyway unfortunately the rejection of my post came after some time of being a little disgruntled with all the posts from people clearly taking the mickey and then to see an offered rejected just really annoyed me. By the way again the offering of the item on your group was also a calculated and thought out move – I knew when I made the offer that they would be an item that would be likely to attract little interest (what with all these laptops changing hands) and after 2 and a half days of not asingle reply I figured my expectation was being realised so I’d widen the net.
I think that ‘s all I wish to say , but please consider some of the aspect I have mentioned especially about groups that seem to be not the most apt may still be apt for reasons you may not be aware of .
Sorry to everyone else if you have found this boring but just wanted to put my points across and will leave it at this.
Thanks for reading and , Rachel, apologies again for the delay in replying

also like any swim nappies around the same size.
Thank you
Booked it packed it forgot the swim nappies and swim vest
oops and she forgot this aswellLooking for a fold up buggy or stroller that reclines to take away on

Yeah a lot of that made sense judderman and while I haven't thanked you I'd like to give you a huge 'thumbs up' :money: (there you go, have that one)
On a cheerier note I applied (not requested) for one of the items offered on my group last night - my first ever (well I guess there's a first time for everything). so I'm off to pick up a mountain bike later. Have been thinking about getting a bike for a while but it's very (and a I mean very) hilly here and kept thinking, "What if I don't use it?" So keeping one out of landfill and giving it a try is a perfect opportunity. If I don't like it I'll Freecycle it :j0 -

also.

Wanted 5-10% colour printing of 3 x 350 page thesis
Anyone out there with a fast colour laser printer? need to print my
thesis in triplicate next weekend (consumables negociable)
I think our mods may have been asleep when they let this through!!
He is talking 1050 sheets of paper assuming it gets printed right fiirst time every time. Thats 5 x 250 sheet reams of paper. It also HAS to be 1 black and white and 1 colour ink cartridge surely? LASER printer no less!! i'm pleased the consumables are negoCiable (hope he spell checked his thesis better!) because I can't imagine anyone has 5 x 250 sheet reams of paper plus 1 black and white and 1 colour laser ink cartridge just hanging around waiting to go to land fill.
