I am new to Freecycle and I think the idea is great - in principle. I have only used it so far to get rid of some of the clutter that I couldnt sell (I cannot believe people wont pay £5 for an almost unused boys Raleigh bike!!! I suppose they would rather stick £100 on a credit card!!). I cant bear to throw usable items away (hence the clutter!). I give all my clothes and smaller items to the hospice shop, and I have tried - in vain to sell the items like bikes and furniture on the "wanted " boards in Supermarkets and local newsagents. I have posted severel items on Freecycle, and have had good responses, only to have people not collect (when I have stayed in, and I did give my mobile no.). I have also responded to "wanted's" - again all "no shows". I have only managed to get rid of 1 bike this way so I am a bit disillusioned. I think its a great idea for young people starting out with a first home as it can help prevent debt. I do agree that some of the requests are a bit greedy - but I suppose if you dont ask you dont get. I have always been lucky enough to have never had to receive "benefits" of any kind - but it has always bugged me that although I have worked all my adult life (apart from 4 years with babies) people I know who dont work always seem to have brand new stuff whilst I struggle on with 2nd hand! One of my mates lives next door to a couple who have never worked, have 4 kids and the biggest Plasma screen tv I have ever seen!! I have my grandads old telly. I think the "freecycle" theory should be used utilised in tandem with the benefits system.

Your granadads old telly.............. luxury, you were lucky.

Only joking, our county has a freecycle scheme. Its a brilliant idea. From my observation its seems that younger people tend to want new items and not second hand ones. Even though they are just as good.
