I put on the end of offered items "Please have some manners when contacting me about this item, replies along the lines of 'I want this', 'I'll take it' etc will be ignored."

And (to date) I've never had a response other than a pleasant one explaining why they'd like it.

BTW is there a way of checking what freecycle members have posted before? I'd like to check this if possible when deciding who to offer things to, as I'd rather not give it to someone who doesn't post wanteds all the time with no offereds, if that makes sense.
(Although I realise people may post wanteds but no offereds but offer things in response to other peoples wanteds IYSWIM)

Hiya - you can do a search in the group pages for a particular username, word, phrase etc. Just click on 'messages' down the left hand side of the group page, and then enter the username in the box and click on search. I've used that myself!

In addition to Pam's comment you can also use * as a 'wild card'
for example Fred_Bass* is the search box would give you all posts starting like that, so Fred_bassett@anyISP.com would show up IYSWIM
