I look at it like life. Of course there will be annoying and extremely rude people out there, but there will also be those wonderful people you meet everyday. a bit of both, freecycle just seems to bring out the extremes in people I think.
Part of it I'm sure is because its via email and we all know how rude some people can be via email........ cos its not the same as face to face is it?
Partly because some are in it to make money no doubt and lets face it, they are hardly the brightest lightbulb in the shop...... and partly because freecycle attracts some lovely people who do want to really make a difference.
I agree, and maybe I am one of the niave ones in the fact that I did want to make a difference, however, despite choosing carefully who I gave to I was almost always met with the same result
In theory Freecycle is a fabulous idea, in practice the rude seem to outweigh the nice.0 -

I know what you mean, but there are good people out there, otherwise move
I must be lucky about 60% of the people I meet are really nice
Anyone who isn't polite when I get emailed gets ignored and I get on with my bumbling little life and don't worry about it.“Pleasure of love lasts but a moment, pain of love lasts a lifetime.”0 -

have you all considered trying dontdumpthat.com?
its a much better way of advertising things as you dont get hoards of emails!
i was a member of freecycle, but got soooooooooooooooo fed up of it!
dontdumpthat is interactive and freindly and a much calmer way to offer things. with you only getting emails that you would want to receive!
it works in the same way as MSE so you can choose when YOU want to get involved, offer, place awanted add, or ask for am item that is being offered!
i much prefer it!:j :T :j :T :j :T :j :T :j
its a funny old world!!

The easiest way to make a difference is to raise the issue with the group owners and mods. As far as I am aware, they are not telepathic, and need to be made aware of issues directly, rather than being tipped off to check on another forum for somebody who has taken exception to certain aspects.
Problems should be dealt with directly, do not use the Daily Mail readers' attitude of tutting and critcising in front of others, none of whom can make a difference.
(And I see the mutual thanks-bumping circle is in full swing already!!! - best not let the side down...)<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -

Tamsin, firstly welcome to this site. It's unfortunate that you've been attracted here for these reasons but I hope that you will stay and make a contribution to this site also.
Firstly, I don't feel that Pulliptears was intending to criticise the running of the group at all. This thread was started to promote awareness of Freecycle and its principles. Most people are aware that Freecycle is about encouraging recycling, not providing for 'needy' people. Obviously, as a moneysaving forum, people are also encouraged to join by the prospect of saving money on items that they do genuinely need/want and that other people might be tempted to throw away.
This thread has evolved over the months into a light-hearted (certainly intended to be) look at some of the more cheeky requests that turn up every day - all over the country. I don't think the local freecycle group that you moderate is any worse than others in terms of people trying their luck! There's no malice intended and it is unfortunate that some people have taken offence at some of the quotes posted on here.
On a personal level, I am a member of the same freecycle group. I have nothing but respect for the moderators of the group and don't have any real objection to 'Wish-list Wednesday'. Nonetheless, it does bring out the more unrealistic requests and desires of some of the group's members! I have been lucky enough to be given some great items and to give unwanted stuff to others who have had lovely manners.
Unfortunately, there are always a small minority of people everywhere who are greedier than others. Perhaps a little light-hearted mockery is understandable in those circumstances?0 -

Again, if you had researched this properly and recognised the facts, you would have found the original request was deleted, but the person asking for the Harley then took the matter to the Freecycle Uk moderation team, who asked for it to replaced.
Full details can be provided if required, but it may be worth clarifying matters before making unfounded comments and offering opinion on matters you are not fully familiar with.<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -

Thats as may be, but the message that appeared in my inbox purely stated "Wanted Harley davidson". As this thread is for posting amusing Freecycle posts and it was not just amusing but actually in my inbox I posted it here.
There was no need to research. It obviously got through and was reinstated, which sort of proves my theory about the lack of moderation of wanted posts right to the top of the chain doesnt it?0 -
Again, if you had researched properly before making comment you would understand that not all 2000 + members are on manual moderation - most members can make a request, or offer, and it will immediately be sent to all members.
So of course the Harley message got through - the OP was deleted, the requestor complained, and UK Freecycle overruled the local group moderators and insisted the request was posted.
So why do you think that would NOT appear in your inbox second time around?
I feel that you need to spend more time conversing with the other members of the group so you can understand their needs, and they can listen to your issues.
Or do you have an aversion to dealing directly with your problems?<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -

Well said.
All this endless debate about who said what and where etc is getting verrrry boring. Thanks heavens for the 'ignore' feature  Maybe it could be taken off list to private messages/email.
