I actually love Freecycle and have managed to pick up enough flowerpots this year so as not to have to buy any so i'm a happy bunny as I use about 200 a year!

Have given away loads of stuff too but this winds me up most of the time. People are SO rude! no please, no thank you and assumptions that the item is theirs. I have actualy not given something away rather than give it to someone who was rude.

In fact a couple of weeks ago we had a futon mattress to give away. The husband emailed saying "I want this and will pick up on Thursday, ring me on ***********" (yes, really!) So I didn't respond to his email immediately knowing that there would be other replies. We were then away for the weekend and when we got back there was another email from his wife (Same email address, signed a different name) an exceedingly polite request, explaining that they were having family to stay and that it would come in handy and if I decided to give it to them they would be able to collect at my convenience. I relented and gave it to her...to make a point more than anything!

We think she saw her hubbys email to us and freaked out at him, knowing that they didn't stand a chance with a demand like that, especially as my ad stated quite clearly "A please and a thank you go a LONG way to making me want to give you something" I add this to all my messages now, fed up with the rude individuals. Had a congratulatory email last time saying well done for standing up the rude ones.

Tempting to offer them a pair of hats really. Although this isn't any where near as bad as asking for a wide screen TV etc. It is at least the sort of thing that one might buy on a whim one year and then decide they don't need/want any more.

Don't get me wrong I love the concept (and keeping stuff out of landfill has to be good) and have no issues with the friendly, polite and reasonable folk on it - BUT 2 things I dislike on it:

    1) The ones who aren't polite, friendly reasonable (this includes those asking for high value items and those looking to have their homes substantially furnished for free - no issues with the odd item, I still remmeber moving into my flat and was grateful for the bits n pieces my family gave me to start me off)

    2) The fact that the whole movement has rules , especially on things like no. of wanted posts by any one poster per month and on asking for high value items, and yet the moderators let these messages through :confused:

Yes I'd be inclined to do that too - remember one guy doing this , saying "I'll pick it up on such a day" and I thought like **** you will - a nice way of excluding yourself from the short list well done sir.

I would not wish to do this as people shouldn't need prompting to be polite    - if their parents omitted to teach them manners , well then they can suffer the disadvantages that that might bring them.

I am a moderator of my local group. It is a large group with 3300 members and now 1300 messages a month. The whole movement does not have rules on the amount of wanteds and high value goods. Each group can decide that individually. The only national rules are goods must be suitable for all ages. So e.g. no firearms, !!!!!! etc. And everything for free.

Up until last month we deleted all high value goods and limited wanteds to three a month but that brought in a lot of complaints. Since letting anything legal through we have only had one complaint. I personally do not like so many wanteds and high value goods to be asked for but we have five moderators so I had to go with the flow.

Also moderators do not get first pick of things.

If you are not happy about the way your group is run politely email your moderators and let them know. We are there to help. We listen to ideas. We vote amongst the members or ourselves and change things when required to try and run a better and more efficient group. But remember we are all volunteers who spend a lot of time each day moderatoring something we believe in. I want to keep stuff out of landfills and that is my reason for joining and now moderating.

Also I do not mind if I put something on there and someone collects it and trys to sell it. I either could not be bothered to sell it or could not find a buyer myself or not appropriate for the local charity shop. If it saves me a trip to the tip (and filling the landfill) or paying the local council to take it away I am still happy. It has left my house. IMHO

What a cheek! I haven't had anything like that, but apart from the couple who took away the bed base who were really nice and thanked me, no-one else has bothered to post a 'thank you' or even said thanks when they took the item away. The guy who took my old microwave away even had the cheek to say 'oh it's quite old isn't it, but I'll take it anyway' I was so gobsmacked, I couldn't think of anything to say in reply.

There was someone posting on this thread last night who was boasting about how much stuff he got off Freecycle, and the money he made selling it to 'mugs' on Ebay. Its the people like that who really wind me up. I emailed the Mods here about him, and was glad to see they deleted his posts (and may well have banned him)
I'm happy to give stuff away to people who can make use of the items, but I don't like the thought of greedy so-and-so's profiting from my generosity, and probably depriving someone of something they could have made good use of.

    IMHO
