Paignton and Torquay are right next to each other....where one ends the other begins.
Torquay is the livelier of the two with loads of bars and nightclubs wheras Paignton is more family orientated with nicer beaches.
Brixham makes up the third town of Torbay and is a little fishing port (with fab chippies!!)
The best ones in Paignton are in the Preston Area just up from the beach in Seaway Road. One is a little place called Richards (which isn't open late) and just up the road from it is The London Fryer which is great and they do big portions ;)
Where in Paignton are you staying?
If it's in one of the holiday camps, you're going to be the other side of town towards Brixham rather than Torquay and Goodrington or Broadsands will be your nearest beaches. (Another good chippie at Broadsands called Squires)

Now you've said it, the London fryer sounds familiar too :)

I think that migh be it. Just up the road is a holiday park that you have to go down a proper steep hill to get to. It's been a few years since I last went

I think you might be talking about Three Beaches. Was there a parade of shops next to the steep hill and a pub called the Waterside on the main road opposite?
My husband says he will leave me if I don't stop shopping......... God I will miss that man.
