Read Post 1. The buyer tried to buy tax online which cannot be done until vehicle registered to them by DVLA. Its a red tape thing and nothing to do with the dealer/seller.

Dealer could have taxed at cost if THE BUYER requested.

Still don't understand why the dealers shouldn't sell the car without tax, one can buy a brand new Rolls Royce/Bentley at £200k but it won't be taxed....its up to the buyer how they wish to go about it..not the seller!

Ha! Typical used car dealer attitude!! So in cases like the OP's where the car has probably been sitting around on the lot untaxed for sometime, it's the buyer who has to have the grief when he comes to try and tax it is it?
what grief ? hes been pointed in the right direction and taxed it in 3 minutes, quite obviously he bought it back end of july and dint want to loose a months tax for the sake of 3 days , READ THE POST !
As a car dealer you cant wipe there bum for them as well !

Ha ha, but you know as well as I do...car dealers are expected to move heaven & earth for the next 3-6 months after sale. A fly splattered onto windscreen..dealers fault!..A brake light bulb has suddenly blown and plod has given me a ticket...I want compensation from dealer because it's not fit for purpose...blah blah !!!!.

    its called the real world
not some ideal world you seem to live in

have you ever bought a second hand car?

if you have then you will be aware that advertising always come down to competitive pricing so road tax isnt factored into the price unless its already on the screen
and what you obviously arent aware of so i will explain vehicle tax is commensurate with vehicle emissions so where you are thinking probably £30 a year in your bubble world the real world price might be nearer £250 if punter chooses unwisely

please by all means give input to the forum but lets keep it real world

Yes in the real world there are a lot of unscrupulous used car dealers out there. Obviously as your not one (or 2 of them) so you would include the tax/emission category of the cars you are selling in your advertising wouldn't you?

As I've said, in the dealerships I have worked for (main dealers I may add), cars were not delivered to the customers without tax. Personally I do not see what benefit it has to either the customer or the seller in not having the dealer tax the car... at the end of the day, it has to have tax so the dealer may as well tax it. After all, when buying a new car the tax is usually not included in the screen price so the customer pays anyway.

But then I suppose its down to what kind of customer service you want to provide.

    <Pedant>
It isn't Road tax, which was abolished in 1937 by Winston Churchill, The correct term is Vehicle Excise Duty or VED.
Car tax or Vehicle tax is commonly used but never Road Tax

    This should save some arguments

" No thanks I will do that myself when I get home" Ok Lord Sugar, you do realise its illegal to drive it home? " No worries, I've paid you, I have all documentation and its my car, its my problem now"
