he may well be known to staff in the establishment

like a regular 'homeless boy' in glasgow

we get him in the store at least once a week with a customer buying him clothes because he was soo so scrawn and his clothes are all ripped

its hard to explain to the customers that this particular individual operates in various locations in glasgow as a con artist

he changes his clothes before he starts his begging routine to the ripped garments and members of the general public take pity on him, buy him clothes and other things no doubt

he returns them or sells them on to raise money and hes probably one of countless individuals practising the same tactics

if you would like to help the homeless or less fortunate, it is probably best to either contribute to a recognised big issue vendor or one of countless well know charities, including shelter, thanks

Sorry but I must completely disagree

Given the reactions of the staff this was obviously not a case where the dishevelled chap was a con artist.

To suggest contributing to a big issue vendor or a charity would not help that particular chap in the way the OP wanted.

Please OP - name and shame!
I do not smoke. I last smoked on 03 November 2011. I will not give in to that awful addiction again.

yes, it is far better to buy someone a meal than give money to some of the 'big' charities. just look up their annual statements and see how much money goes on 'salaries', advertising, corporate 'events', even hospitality! very little of your money actually reaches the people/animals it is intended for.
so, go on OP - name and shame!

OP you're not a nutter, you've a very generous and caring person. I just hope that the ignorant staff who thought it was strange are never in a position of want, we none of us know what's ahead and times are getting worse for everyone.

These people deserve to be made known so their company can deal with them with at the very least a course in customer service. Thanks for being such a nice person :)

    They've always got a dog!

Dogs aren't allowed in most shelters and many places homeless people hang out in during the day (like libraries) , so many homeless people who have dogs choose to sleep rough and are more visible on the street, they receive less support than those that can access shelters, that's why they tend to be on the streets more. I think it's friendlier to buy a couple of coffees and snacks or fruit and pass the time of day having a drink with a homeless person, if you smoke share a smoke. You soon get to know the one's who are genuine and those who are conning or pretending to raise drug money.

If you have details of specific big charities where "very little of your money actually reaches the people/animals it is intended for" then please name them, otherwise don't try and give all charities an unwarranted bad name.

I doubt you will hear from the OP again. Did it really happen?
