Buying someones lunch - Not the done thing....

Grrr went to pay for someone’s food and drinks today (he looked like a homeless guy or at least very very down on his luck) as a random act. He looked like he could have done with a really good meal.
It was a eat then pay place.
The assistant was SO rude, firstly she asked 20 questions do you know him? Why would you buy his food, don’t you think this is weird? laughed at me made me repeat so her co-worker could have a laugh too then refused to take my money as I did not know him.
When I asked to see the shift manager she arrived and repeated the assistant’s stance.
When I asked to clarify their problem (maybe they did not want to encourage him to stay in store) the answer was ‘because it’s just weird’. They also burst out laughing while i was leaving the shop.
I really don’t like giving money directly to beggars or the homeless after working in a shelter for a few years as they tend to have underlying addiction issues (not all cases admittedly, but enough that I make it a rule not to give money) So I did not want to give money directly to him.
So thank you ladies you made me a feel like a complete nutter and cheated a man out of a good free meal.

Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...

How sad that these silly people couldn't take a random act of kindness at face value. I wonder what they would have done had you said "Yes, I know him he's my cousin".
I think I would have left muttering something about undercover boss or something.
OP it was a generous and thoughtful thing you tried to do. I do think you should name and shame, yes. Pity you didn't have someone videoing it for Youtube."So long and thanks for all the fish" :hello:0 -
what a lovely thing to do OP. What business is it of theirs who pays for the food, as long as it's paid for?
I wonder if the person had previously been banned or was in the habit of pilfering free food off other people?
Whatever it was name and shame the establishment.Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £24,616.090 -
It's not an unusual thing to do at all.. lots of people would rather buy someone a meal than pay for any possible drug/drink addiction the person they're helping out may have.
It made me wonder if maybe they don't like the man hanging around near their shop, and this is an ill thought out way to discourage him.
Please do name the establishment though0 -
Name and shame the establishment."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

Well done you for trying. ! Shame on them for laughing at you and not letting you pay for him.
