Dealing with all these is order...
    1) We are on the Quorn Exchange
    2) Downstream 7616/ Upstream 448
    3) I'm using channel 4 which over laps neighbouring ones slightly, but everyone else is using 1 or 11. Will go walkabout in a bit.
    4) first 2 commands and last one said they required evaluation - is that right?
    I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.
  • Is it the wireless dropping, or the entire broadband connection?

i.e. have you wired something into the router and checked that's working when the wifi has dropped?

IIRC it's just the wireless that goes. Will check next time it drops. It's been better today.

1 & 2. Your exchange has been enabled for ADSL2+, but your line has been capped at ADSL1 interleaved rates by your ISP - need to check with Orange on your package. Still need to see the rest of the line stats asked for though....

    3. good, you may be suprised by the variation :)

    4. To run those command lines, you need to right-click on the command prompt in All Programs list and select Run As Administrator :)
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

I had a problem with my ADSL wireless dropping for ages, eventually realised it was the entire broadband going down - caused by having too long a telephone wire between the phone line and the router.

Moved the router closer to the socket using a tiny little cable and it was fixed.

Doubt it'll help you, but you never know :)

Yes, you're definitely capped on ADSL1 without a doubt. The speeds you've been experiencing are totally in line with this line profile. If orange put you on ADSL2+ profile, you should sync around 11 meg down and 1 meg up. This would give you a significant speed increase (unless there's congestion on your exchange).

Sky and TT have LLU'd tyour exchange, so would be worth looking at either for a better service, provided you don't mind the phone line going over to them.

Right, that's the line issue, now to look properly at the wifi. Just bear in mind that you mentioned it was worse in the evenings, you may need to repeat the inssider walkabout then. However, I recon once you've run the command lines things'll get much better ;)

Apologies for not getting back sooner.

Spoke to Orange and they are upgrading my service and sending a new router out. In the meantime I have acquired a couple of powerline plugs, which have solved the dropping out problem, but it is still a bit slow and logging into gmail is painfully slow.
Will see how I go woth the new router and if it's still slow I will do a channel survey.
Thank you to everone who has helped. :)

In my experience these are the worst type of problems and don't usually get resolved without hardware replacement. Think of all the hours of time you have already spent. I have been known to buy a product from Argos, test it, and take it back under the 14 day guarantee. It will put your mind at rest...

I would also take a note of what Bluesnake said. I never advise wireless over cable. 15yrs in the industry, only ever seen a cat5 cable fail once. Wireless failures... I've lost count. I can recommened the xyzel powerline products. They really do work well.
