Wireless Dropping Repeatedly

Options
Hi all

Title says it all really, my wireless connection has been dropping repeatedly over the last couple of weeks - getting progressively worse.
Many phonecalls to ISP have resulted in changing channel on the router, factory resettting the router, changing the security settings, updating the firmware etc etc. None of which have helped at all.
I have also found that I am unable to login to gmail from my FF browser.
One of my kids has had accesss to my laptop and I'm wondering we have picked up a virus of some sort? I have run the latest version of Malwarebytes, which found nothing.

Is there anything else I can try? I have considered a new router, but don't want the expense if it's not likely to be that.

TIA
I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

Logical next step is to borrow a laptop from a friend and see if the same happens to them, and also try yours on someone else's wifi. This should give some idea whether it's the router or laptop at fault.

Check also the location of the router - if it is close to anything electrical/electronic, try moving it.
How do I add a signature?

Are you sure that it is your router \ home broadband that is the issue (ie, does your laptop work ok on wireless on another router and internet connection?). Does another laptop work ok on your router or does that still drop the wireless connection?

If you have not managed to prove the fault is your router it will be worth trying to. It maybe that you need to update the wireless drivers on your laptop or have a faulty wireless card on your laptop?

    Thank you for your replies.
Have tried logging onto gmail with a different laptop on this network and it works fine. Mine won't log on to it via my mifi either.
I have just run CCleaner and it cleared loads of rubbish out of IE browser (which I never use - so I suspect thanks are in order to DS2 ).
I am now really worried about what else might be lurking :(.
And yes, I will now make sure no-one else has access to my laptop when it is unattended :o.
Wireless is also dropping on ipad and daughters laptop (although that may have a dodgy wireless card).

  • Have you checked what channels are in use around you? Changing channels is only useful if you know what to change it to

    Try installing this: http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/

It'll show you the signal strengths per channel. When I moved house, i used this to make sure my signal never collided with my neighbours

When this happens, we connect to the router via ethernet cable from the £1 shop.

Additionally, we have an Av Sender in the house which is used for a tv upstairs, this when set certain transmitting channels takes out the wireless. So much so that it simply connects/then disconnects. When it did connect, it would not draw any data from the network.

Hmmm this is interesting. The wireless problem seems to have coincided with new neighbours moving in, and gets worse in the evening. I was on holiday when they moved in, so not absolutely sure of this.

Have tried a few different channels on the router to no avail.
    Are my wireless days over?

How do I check my network card and drivers?

I had this problem once and it turned out someone had removed the phone microfilter between the skybox and the wall. Try checking if they are all plugged in and maybe replace them if they are old.

Cheers Hemophobic. Forgot to mention we had changed the filter as well.
Going to try the router in an alternative phone socket now.

Put the router in a high up position in the room

By quirk of architect's design, the source of the possible interference is coming from a second floor (my router is on the ground floor) would this still help?
