I assume by mention of microfilters (eww) it's not virgin but Sky or BT etc.
Those would be my first questions.
We are on Orange BB with a Netgear Router.I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

What you need to do to confirm this is run a speed test, unplug the ski box, and then run another speed test. If the second is considerable faster than the first then the box is causing a problem.
We use http://www.speedtest.net/ for the speed test.
No Skybox here. Although it's possible that the neighbour's sky box is within range.
Just done a speed test and it is a bit slow at 4.89 download and 0.32 upload.
Normal download is about 7.
If it has been unstable for some time, this might have affected the speed?I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

Evening speeds have been all over the place for the last 3 days. Sometimes even my super-reliable 60Mb cable connection has come to a dead stop. I have just a slight suspicion it might be something to do with the dozens of Olympic video feeds on offer by the beeb...

Wondering if heavy traffic issues are affecting my gmail login problem? We are just outside Loughborough, where I believe loads of athletes are training.I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

Typically the one i don't have much experience with.
When you say its a Netgear Router i take its the DGN1000 model they supply?
If so can i ask if you have updated the firmware for it since you have had it?
Fairly detailed step by step here.

Yes it's the DGN1000. It had a factory reset a couple of days ago, after which it updated the firmware.
I have some powerline plugs arriving on Friday, so although they won't solve the problem they should get round it.I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

orange is BT basicaly. http://www.ispreview.co.uk/story/2010/04/16/orange-uk-hands-control-of-its-broadband-adsl-isp-network-to-bt.html
and not very good. friend has orange and over the last 5 weeks have had nothing but speed issues drop outs and and a new router does no help and BT engineer finds no fault with the line or equipment so its purely an ISP issue that orange do not want to rectify as they say their network if fine. your upload is very slow indeed. download speed would be ample enough for two computers in use on the wifi network anymore and you bandwidht with not cope, things will run slow and you end up with no bandwidth untill the speed becomes available, log into your router and look at wireless network and make sure only the things you know have you wepkey are connected, my router has a nasty habbit of allowing iphones blackburry HTC to use the open wifi feature in my router and places them on my home network when people checkbox the save this connection feature on thier phone.0 -
Checked attached devices and the is nothing that shouldn't be there.
This morning's speedtest is 5.66 download and still 0.36 upload.
We switched to Orange because VM's adsl service was terrible (we were old cable customers and moved house to where there is no cable) maybe it is time to switch again?

Don't think about switching just yet, you haven't actually bottomed out IF you have an actual problem yet.
1. Upload - your upload is about right for a ADSL1 connection (up to 448 kb/s). We do not know if you should have a faster upload as we don't know what is at your exchange. Put your phone no. or postcode in here and tell us which phone exchange you're on and what type of broadband is available there:-
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search
2. Download - we need to see your Line stats from your router. Open a browser and type 192.168.0.1 into the address line. Default Netgear Login details should be admin and password for the username and password. You need to find the section for line stats/router status/(can't remember OTTOMH what netgear call it) and post up here line speed up/down (usually kb/s), line attenuation (dB) up/down and snr/snrm (dB) up/down. Only then will we be able to offer proper advice as to whether there's an issue and the nature of the issue on your line.
3. Wifi - you need to run inssider (as previously advised) on a laptop and carry it around the house, noting networks, channels and signal strengths in all areas. This is important, as any interference may be localised.
This seems like a lot, but it'll give the best picture and therefore enable us to give you best advice to solve this
note:- one good thing about your router is that it has a standard SMA aerial connector on it...if it is proven it's a wifi issue then there is a very cheap and effective solution available, but let's not jump the gun......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
one more thing, if this is localized to one laptop, try this:-
1. go to Start > Run, type cmd and enter.
2. in the command prompt box, type "ipconfig/flushdns" without the quotes and Enter.
3. type "ipconfig/release" no quotes and Enter
4. type "ipconfig/renew" no quotes and Enter
5. type "netsh winsock reset catalog/ " no quotes, and note the space after the slash, and Enter. This will need a reboot to fully take effect.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
