Just tell him to use the Feds solicitor and not to contact you again. He hasn't really done anything wrong at this point but tell him you will consider further contact as harassment.0

I have a decent reputation and get a lot of (repeat) custom from local "services" and even sometimes magic up extras or a bit of discount for guys like this. However one little oik, who if he hadn't told me he had been referred by another officer, I simply wouldn't have entertained. (I am old enough and daft enough to be selective who I deal with).
A day later, after a super cheap price on a car for his "wife", he was back ranting on about imaginery faults and demanding a cash discount and leaning very heavily on his police "powers", at one point his "warrant card" being waved in my face.
I asked him where he was based while I checked over the car and as soon as he said P*****, I stopped what I was doing, went straight to the phone and called the station and asked to speak to the duty Sergeant. Remarkably quickly I was put through and asked if he new one of his officers Jim McAllion (Hi Jim!) was abusing his authorities. Even quicker, the nice Sergeant recognised the name and asked to speak to him. Jim came in and still tried to bluster through, but I put him on the phone. I didn't hear what was said, but he left pdq and I called back to find out what had happened. Jim certainly worked in P***** Police Station, but he was a civilian worker, a cleaner in fact and he was waving about his (photo ID) door entry card. His services as it turned out, were no longer required.
Sorry to go on a bit, but this chancer with you is expoiting your weakness. He low-balled you, got away with it and is now picking at every thread as it appears to work with you. The stupid, extra step of attempting to influence you with his job (real or imagined) is surely the final straw.
If this is a genuine private sale, and he examined the car, it is sold as seen. Any further contact, ask him for his full name, badge number and station and you are going to town with him.
If he is real, his boss will tear him a new one, if he is phoney, the police will be even more interested.0 -
Tell him that you are concerned that he may be abusing his position as a police officer by the way he is pressurising you and that you have written to the Chief Constable about your concerns. He will back off unless he is sure of his facts. It will also make him careful of relying on the fact that he is (or claims to be) a police officer. If he is he must not abuse his position. If he is not he is in a difficult position in claiming to be one.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0

Thankyou all so much for your quick and helpful replies, i am just baffled that he has come back at me thinking he can bully me.
I will keep you all updated on the outcome (if there is one)
I know i am 100% in the right and after looking at his ebay feedback he has some some "hot" gear in the past for a supposed police man!!!
Thankyou again, really is much appreciated x0 -
I bet he is not really a policeman. Tell him to come back in uniform to claim his refund.
He has seen your a soft touch and will fleece you forever. Next week it needs a battery, The week after its some brakes.
After you have given him £20,000 he will have changed everything and had several holidays at your expense.
If he is a policeman and comes round you now have his number to make an official complaint.
You should have stuck to your original price he offered, Any negotiation should have increased the price. My partner says i cant sell it for less than £1500 but as i agreed £1200 you can have it for that. But dont tell him.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Policeman my bum.
He sounds like a right lemon and if he hassles you any further invite him round and smack him right in the boat.0 -
Lisa_Atkinson wrote: »Hi There
Short (well kind of lol) of the story is, we put a 2002 64k mileage 206GTI on ebay auction, auction ended with no winner as didnt hit reserve of £1500, but 10 mins later someone messages me to say they would offer £1200, so i accepted leaving it that he would collect today as he was only 10 mins away and it meant it got it sorted and off my drive as i needed to pay another car off we have got.The description stated as much as possible all the details of the car and i listed the couple of known faults the car had so he was aware of these, nothing was missed off.
Anyway after various messages he arrives, has a thorough look over the car, takes it for a test drive, goes over it with a fine tooth comb, tells me that because he is a police officer he is cautious with cars after seeing so many cut and shuts etc etc, after bidding me £1200 by message he then barters me down to £1040 as he said that's how much i would have received after ebay fees if it had gone for the £1160 bidding ended at (regardless that i have a reserve of £1500!!), i accepted so we proceeded to sort the paperwork, i had drawn up two receipts both of which stated sold as seen, no warranty given, and both signed and dated.
Then about two hours later i receive quite an abrupt message from him saying that i have been deceitful and have lied to him as when he got home he had a look under the car and saw that there was some putty on the exhaust, he said he was appalled and disgusted that i lied to him and never told him about it, also claiming that one of the other things i had mentioned wasn't what i said it was and that i either pay for a new exhaust or give him his money back plus £20 for fuel he had put in. Well i had no idea there was any putty on the exhaust as we have only had the car since feb (he was aware of this also, the car was only a stop gap until we got insurance money from a write off to purchase the car we wanted) and only covered 1k miles since having the car as it was only used once a week 20 miles a week max, admittedly we never looked underneath the car when we bought it, but the car had just been given a full mot by a very reputable dealer (who we bought it off) and there were no advisories other than for the two items that were stated on the ebay description so we bought it on that basis and that it drove well with full service history and low miles.
I am now being threatened with all sorts because i said that he had signed the receipt saying sold as seen etc, he says that because he is a police officer he knows about this stuff and that in contractual law if there is an act of dishonesty by either party the agreement is void, and that he will be taking me to the small claims court and he doesnt care if he wins or looses because of the police federation he is in its all free so its no skin off his nose basically.
I have phoned citizens advice and they have said that aslong as i didnt describe anything about the cars exhaust system being fine and in working order with no faults there is a very slim chance of his winning any claim, plus the fact he didnt actually buy through or put any bids no ebay.
Im just really worried that as he says he is a policeman he will find someway of beating the system and i will be robbed blind.
Can he do this, does he really have a claim to pursue me even though he test drove it and signed with sold as seen and no warranty and i have all the paperwork, messages etc to back up my argument?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, i am really worried about it, also knowing where i live im already jittering every time a car pulls up with being at home with my son in the day on my own.
Sorry for rambling
Thanks
If you have any witnesses to these threats and/or any messages etc. contact the local station and ask to talk to an inspector.
He is either impersonating a police officer and if he is they should be very interested, or if he isn't, the Inspector ought to be very concerned that pone of his officers is harassing a member of the public in such a way.
In contractual terms, the CAB is, in this case, absolutely right. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

The op hasn't actually been threatened.
How is saying you are a police officer and know you rights wrong if he is flyboy?0 -

Using the police federation to file a vexatious court case is wrong, threatening it is just as bad0 -
If he continues with this "I am a police officer line" I would suggest you mention to him that you will be making a complaint to his force professional standards department as he would appear to be abusing his powers in this situation. It would be interesting to see if he is actually a serving officer or someone who is trying it on.
I agree, this is a private transaction, there is no reason why he should mention he's a police officer.
There is a possibility that it's someone impersonating a police officer and if he does this to make financial gain an offence may have been committed. In memory of Chris Hyde #8670
