To put it bluntly, tell him to go whistle. He checked the car over, he took it for a test drive ( was he insured?) and he bought it, buyer beware.

The previous advice is good. Sold as seen, buyer beware as long as you are not obviously lying. It would have to be pretty major for a court to find in his favour. Sounds like he's trying it on.

A bit of putty on an exhaust is NOT a deal breaker in any shape or form - even if you were aware of it. Even if you'd specifically said that the exhaust was sound. Exhuast putty (in appropriate cases) is a perfectly sound and MOT worthy repair. The only time it might be an issue is if you had specifically said "new" or "unrepaired" exhaust.

If he contacts you again, ask him for his badge number and station, then put a complaint in about him abusing his police officerishness. If he refuses to give it then report him to your local station (you should have his name and address from the V5) and let them trace his details.

If it turns out he's not a policeman after all (maybe a Plastic Pig?) then they might want a word anyway for pretending and giving them a bad name in the process :)

    Hi Lisa

Goods sold in a shop are covered by the Sale of Goods Act, which means they must be fit for the purpose for which they are intended.

However, with private sales, the concept of "caveat emptor" or "buyer beware" applies. This basically means it's up to the buyer to satisfy themselves that the goods are satisfactory and as such are "sold as seen". You provided a receipt which both of you signed so he has no legal comeback.

Please do not worry about the buyer stating he's a policeman - did you see his warrant card?

Trying to use his position as a police officer for personal gain is misconduct and an offence. So, if he "tries it on" again, have another person present as a witness and go to the police with his name, rank and warrant number - he is just trying to bully you - don't stand for it!

    +1 for sold as seen.

Remember that police officer does not equal lawyer.

If he continues with this "I am a police officer line" I would suggest you mention to him that you will be making a complaint to his force professional standards department as he would appear to be abusing his powers in this situation. It would be interesting to see if he is actually a serving officer or someone who is trying it on.

Ask him for his name and number (I doubt he is police) and threaten to report him to his superiors for harassment.

Sound as if he quite clued up and I imagine the car will be back on EBay for £1500 withina few weeks.
