Actually, ebay got around that by saying that boxes had to be listed in the boxes & packaging section, thereby eliminating fakes.Yes
I agree.
The boxes are always started at 99p. What was a problem with this one was that it was started way above the ordinary price for a photo, which makes it calculated to deceive rather than just a canny seller.
It can be the case (haha!) that people genuinely want an original box for a piece of equipment.0 -

The picture does not customize my ipad with 140,000 apps as the description mentions.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
The description also gives it as new: "New: A brand-new, unused, unopened
and undamaged item." - does the delivered photo meet that description?

FYI, I have reported the item as a fraudulent listing via the "Contact" button on ebay's Safety Centre; perhaps other readers of this thread might like to do likewise.
And another. Reported.illegitimi non carborundum0 -
I wonder if he has any more of these available?

I can't see you not getting your money back - it seems very clear that this is a scam. Ebay's success relies on their keeping it clean, so if you've reported it the seller should be banned (or at least warned).
Escalate further if necessary. Ebay also have a chatroom and seem keen to help if you talk to them.
If the seller is a business seller and uk based and the item was Buy It Now, not an auction you can also use the distance selling regs to your money back if you are within the cooling off period.0 -
Just had a look at this listing out of curiosity, went to put in a fraud report and, interestingly, some information comes up:
The listing has items being sold without the owner's authorization. You didn't bid.
Would seem he is trying to wriggle out of it (through Paypal anyway), won't stop OP getting his money back though! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
It still doesn't really explain though why someone would spend several hundred pounds and not bother reading 5 lines of text.
Most of that text is standard. The buyer probably saw it and assumed it was the same as all the other listings they'd seen and didn't notcie the comment buried in the middle. People in a hurry see part of a notice and assume the rest.
These sites use exactly the same text - with the bit about the listing being for a picture.

Personally, if I was buying something like that, I'd read all the details to make sure of what version it was, whether it was refurbed etc0 -
I can understand a buyer missing the details in the listing. I don't buy expensive electricals from ebay, but in a shop I'd look at the 'headline' stats to make sure it's what I need, but not read all the specs, because a lot of them I just don't understand what they are. For instance when I bought my Netbook from PC world I looked at weight, memory, Battery life etc, but things about type of processor etc which I don't know the difference anyway I just skipped.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0

I really do feel sorry for you OP - it really was a dirty trick buy starting selling at such a high price it really does look like they intended to deceive. If they were geniune they would have send a prompt refund.
By the way you can report the item but it does say as other poster has stated "you did not bid!"0
