I can't see how the OP could afford such a holiday himself, I assume his family have paid for it.

That's a pretty big assumption when you don't know what the benefits the OP claims.

It's as big an assumption that he has paid for it himself when you don't know what benefits the OP claims, what's good for the goose ...

The thing is you see people who work but can't afford a holiday get sick of people who don't work having holidays. Especailly to Florida via a 9 hour flight, which is fairly obvious unless people misunderstand those who work for a living.

Sounds like jealousy to me. This site has plenty money saving advice if people need it... or benefits advice too if they want this grass is greener luxury lifestyle. If it helps you come to terms with things I haven't had a holiday since 1997... I've actually lived abroad since then... working.

I think jealousy has made many posters on this forum very bitter and angry indeed.

He didn't mention what the rest of his family do. They may all be in employment which wouldn't affect his ESA if contribution based. If this is the case, do they all fly off and leave him behind because he's not working? If he's on contribution based ESA he's earned his ESA through previous work/contributions. I work. My wife is on ESA and DLA. Is she not entitled to come on holiday with me? She actually can't now because of her illness but could, last year.
Some of you...please stop treating all benefit claimants as second class citizens as your default position.
Perhaps he IS swinging the lead but there's nothing in his postings to suggest this.

I thought contribution ESA was based on last 2 years of work. Their posts seem to indicate the last 2 years have not been spent working.

A claim to contributory ESA goes back to the time of the initial claim, which may in some cases be linked to an earlier IB award.
They will have worked (to claim contribution benefits) for 2 years shortly prior to claiming benefit, even though this may have been some time ago now.
Seperately there is time-limiting of the claims payment for certain contributory benefits - 6 months for JSA, 12 months for ESA for people in the work-related group. (the people in the support group do not have time limiting applied)

If time limiting applies, then the person is considered for income-based benefits, but they will not generally qualify if they have a working partner or significant savings.

Holidays can also be beneficial to people who work.

Unfortunately in some cases people seem to reap in more money from the government if they are ill, than people who provide for themselves.

Then they tell anyone who will listen that they'd love to swop places with them if they took their health problems, which many find a stupid thing to say.
