Insurance companies love a 50/50 claim, as its increased premiums for everybody.
  • Thats why everyone should own a Dashboard Camera!!! I have one front and back, they are plugged into the car power, turn on and start recording when i start the car, and shut off 30 seconds after turn the ignition off. £30 each of ebay, they store 150 minutes of recordings, in15 minute consecutive files, and when they memory card is full they record over the oldest file in a loop, so you never have to intervene or reset them.

Reversing into you at the lights and claiming you hit them is becoming a common scam, especially round Birmingham

Dash cams are not only legal in the UK, but actively encouraged.

Some are if they use a screen that the driver can see, or encroach into the area of windscreen that is supposed to be clear.

I took my car for its MoT with the dashcam in place. The tester removed it for the test, saying it restricted the forward vision. I don't agree, as I have it behind the mirror where it is barely visible to me, but he was happy to leave it on the seat for me to refit as soon as I left the premises. It's a grey area.

It's only illegal if it overlaps more than 1cm of the wiper swept area on the drivers side of the windscreen as far as i'm aware.

Do you reckon it's possible to hook up one of those reversing cameras you get on some models to a recorder of some description....fit the camera in the front bumper obviously.

Certainly possible (as are most things) but if you can buy a Chinese off the shelf solution then that is almost certainly a better solution.

It comes down to a Chinese solution with development costs spread across millions of units vs a brit solution for a one off

I'd recommend also having a cheapish hand held camera in the car, if you have an accident, immediately try to get some shots of the driver, passengers, any damage etc. + you get to record voices/sound.

Do not be intimidated by the other driver. You are perfectly in your rights to film. If they try to leave/or threaten you, call the police.

what peevs me the most is that other drivers see what happened and they don't stop and provide their details. I was a pedestrian and I saw a car reverse out of a car park bay and hit a car that was moving.

There were a lot of people around there area. They just looked and walked by. I was in a major rush but I still took time out to inspect the damage and give my details to the party that I felt was the victim.

I also had an accident that wasn't my fault and was surprised that nobody offered to be a witness I had to plead to one driver to stay and be a witness to the incident.
