In economy, I think you'll find that there's little difference between the mjor carriers. That said, there's nothing wrong with Emirates though advance seat selection and personal IFE is pretty standard these days with all carriers. One thing to note with Emirates is that they have 10 seats across on their Boeing 777's, which is packing it pretty tight. It's enough for me to avoid them but that's a personal choice.

You should be able to match Flight Centre's offer of £1240 pretty easily by booking straight from the airlines and it's a simply enough itinerary. If so, that's what I'd recommend you do, just because it cuts out any middleman. Of course, if there's a lot of money to be saved by using 3rd party sites, you'll have to decide whether the potential added hassles are outweighed by this.

On BA you have to pay for it for anything 24 hrs or more before departure.

Yeah, that's extra expense to take into account if the OP can't wait until check-in. Personsally I don't bother unless it's longhaul and I'm looking to get an exit row seat. For short haul, many of the best seats aren't released anyway until a few days before departure so I feel paying in advance is a waste of money. Always found there are good choices left if you're ready at T-24.
  • If you haven't booked yet, https://www.cheapoair.co.uk have a set of China Southern airways flights from edinborough on the 31st December through to the 19th February for a total cost of £792

Cheapoair is one of the worst 3rd party bookers out there.
  • Really? I've used them before a few times no problem, although I only came across them because they were cheapest.

Have a search on Tripadvisor's air travel forum. Lots of complaints about cheapoair and not just minor issues either.
