Well, I did the booking. Flying out Air New Zealand premium economy with a 2 day stopover in Hong Kong.

Flying back Air New Zealand premium economy (in a space seat) via Los Angeles, transit only. It did mean that I had to buy the super expensive 'including the US' travel insurance for the two hours we spend air side at LAX and we will both have to clear US immigration and be photographed and fingerprinted *sigh*...

The space seats had better be worth it.

    Sounds good.

Although sorry Im picturing you tripping over something at LAX and injuring yourself as you got travel insurance for 2 hours? I guess better to be safe than sorry.

Yes US immigration is always fun...but last time I left LAX they were actually really friendly and said we hope you come back. The best was when we landed at Dallas and there was a huge pic of George Bush smiling at you saying welcome to America. I wonder when I go back in October if they will have replaced him with Obama..

    Hi Claire,

yes, I paid the extra for my travel insurance to cover us for our two hours in the US.

I've worked out if I have a modest lottery win between now and November, I can pay an extra £1600 (for both of us) and we can fly business class back and go via Hong Kong.

    We live in hope. :)

Well, back to report. We got home yesterday and the space seats on the AKL- LAX -LHR route were much, much better than the ordinary economy seats with extra leg room on the LHR-HKG-AKL route which I really wouldn't say were worth the extra money.
It might be because the space seats are only 2-2-2 across and have space either side of you meaning you can tuck your legs up underneath you but I managed to get a good six hours sleep on the way home and it made all the difference.
The LHR-HKG and HKG-AKL were horrible for trying to sleep because the armrests were fixed and although there was acres of legroom, because the recline is much bigger, as soon as the bloke in front reclines his seat, you are effectively pinned into place (I was stuck in the middle of a row of three both legs).

I hated Hong Kong so with hidsight (and when we go again) I will choose the route(s) that Air NZ offer with the space seat and not bother to stop over.
