I was watching a neighbours conservatory roof being replaced with a so called light weight roof. I noticed that they just attached wooden rafters from the wall to the top of the existing uPVC frame. The original conservatory did not even have the usual substantial aluminium extrusion beam on top of the uPVC window frames. Seems like a lot of weight to be placed on top of the uPVC frame.

There are countless cowboy installations, and there are countless bodgers out there. The "replacement roof" market is unregulated, and the latest money spinner for all sorts of rogues.

To counter this consumers should be savvy and acting with due diligence, in order to protect their own interests. But hell will freeze over before this ever happens!
  • Hello

I have just read your post from 2012 and I am looking to change my conservatory roof from poly carbon at panels to a superlight tiled roof. Where are you located and can you please give me some advice or even a quote.

I am located in South Wales

    Thank you

    Hilary
  • About 6 years ago I fitted Plastic cladding to the underside of the conservatory roof. I also placed foil insulation and a vapour membrane to minimise heat loss without any condensation
The best thing I ever did, the conservatory is now habitable all year round and cost less than £500 for the whole job and looks fabulous.
  • I too just had a quote based on size of conservatory of between £9499 - £10900 - far too expensive but would like to share that I have a product called koala shade which is very effective in helping with the heat problem.
  • The Quickest and Easiest way to answer this is YES!

    For Example:-

If you purchase a Solid Conservatory roof that needs to be Fabricated on site (At your Home) then the Conservatory roof could always fail on passing Regulations... This is a Obvious FACT!

If you purchase a Conservatory Roofing System that is Fabricated in a Factory but also is Registered under JHAI or LABC before they start work then your Guaranteed to either, Receive your Certificate from the company who you purchased it from or do it yourself.

Most Companies who are Registered will do the Regulations at cost for you which is roughly around £270.
It might be best asking the company who you purchase your New Solid Conservatory roof from to throw them in at no extra cost. I know that Sentinel Solid Roofs are Registered and do special Promos on their certificates.

    JHAI :-

    System Approval

Fast track Building Regulations approval to promote customer confidence and achieve national quality consistency.

We can help with all building types and elements and materials

    Pre-fabricated units
    System buildings
    Off-site construction
    Replacement conservatory roofs

    LABC:-

Technical Guide: Solid roofs on conservatories or porches

EveryoneDate of publication: 23 May 2016

This guidance has been produced to advise and inform suppliers, builders, architects and design consultants on the Building Regulations that apply when replacing a translucent roof on a conservatory or porch with a solid roof.

    PICTURES

    BEFORE - DURING - AFTER

Before:- Make sure you take a Photo of all the Conservatory and the side of the property it is attached to.

During:- Make sure you show the Internal Insulation in the Conservatory Roofing System. (Building Control need to see it being within the Roofing system)

After:- Just like the Before Picture of your Conservatory.

DO NOT JUST TAKE PICTURES OF THE CONSERVATORY ROOF. BUILDING CONTROL NEED TO IDENTIFY YOUR CONSERVATORY AND YOUR PROPERTY
  • There are many 'low cost' solutions available but be warned that they may not comply with building regs and make your property difficult to sell.

A made to measure bespoke factory built solution that provides 0.18 u value insulation and is fully compliant with building regs is what we recommend.
