Changing a conservatory roof from UPVC to tiles

Hi All,
First post on the forum and as this was one of the forums I looked at when looking for advice I wanted to share this with you all. I like many of you felt a little out of my depth when I was considering having a conservatory installed, and at first my husband and I were really happy with the conservatory. That was around 9 years ago and being really honest for the majority of that time the conservatory was hardly used, it was just too cold even with the glass roof. For years it was used more to store the children's toys.
At first I looked at under floor heating and looked at a new glass roof. Then like many of us we heard of the possibility of a tiled conservatory roof. So like we do, I set about looking into the possibility, getting quotes for all the different types of tiled conservatory roof. Firstly I have to say I was shocked at the prices and felt a bit put off. The price differences in some of these companies were even more off putting.
Anyway after hours of looking and several quotes..... in fact a lot of quotes. Like I said some were ridiculous but then we found a company that were online the quotes were also online which was a refreshing change as I'd had enough of sales people. They are called the conservatory roofing centre can not post the link but they are not hard to find. These guys were absolutely brilliant and I have to say nearly £2000 cheaper than some of our quotes. Really can not recommend them enough . Really wanted to upload some photos to share with you all. If like us you are looking for ideas of advice I would honestly speak to these guys, so straight forward and friendly, a real pleasure
Much as I try to respect 1st time posters, as a 1st time poster it is not a good idea to try to promote a company. No matter how you dress it up..
I'm reporting you as a spammer, simple as, anyone who feels the same please do also, of course if you are innocent then I would apologise, but..............I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

Option A is possible but I wouldn't recommend it. It was a logistical nightmare and in retrospect probably quite dangerous.
That said the difference in the room was incredible.I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on a conservatory with:
Option A- False ceiling (office type)
- Led Lights
- Insulation above ceiling
Option B- plasterboard ceiling
- LED Lights
- Insulation above ceiling
My dilemma is
Conservatory £4500
Extension £14000
It would be hard to recoup the extra cost of an extension when I come to sell due to the area although we are desperate for extra space.
I am aware of the temperature issues with a conservatory and would be interested in everyone's thoughts

Oh, well I was going to post some helpful pics of my install but it won't let me as a newbie. Sorry.0

Followed this thread with great interest and a hot/cold conservatory. Spoke to a couple of local firms and they quoted big money to throw away my existing strong metal roof and replace it with a wood and plasterboard version. Then we saw an advert in July for Diamond Seal UK in the Daily Mail. After a look at their website dimondsealuk.co.uk we asked for a quote. They sent their rep who showed us some samples and we placed an order to replace our poly carb panels with new composite panels and seals, which seemed a much more logical alternative and much cheaper than the other quotes we had been given. Our mistake was to pay the deposit by cheque which we were told would not be paid in until after their surveyor had been to measure up for the new panels. That was important to give us time to move money into our current account from other savings accounts.
Unfortunately they paid the cheque in immediately, causing our bank to ring us. We cancelled the contract and asked for our deposit to be returned. That was in July. After many false excuses and failed promises, including two cheques that they stopped payment of we had our hopes raised by a call from a Mr Mark Smith, who claimed he was the owner of the company. He promised to arrange a bank transfer into our account on his return to work the following week. It didn't happen and the mobile number he gave us is no longer in service. Citizens Advice advised us to send them a letter asking for the return of our money by a fixed date to avoid legal proceedings. We sent that last week by registered post but it came back marked "adressee gone away".
Have they gone away or gone bust? Well their web site is still active and their sales line is answered by a lady that says she will ask someone to ring you back. You might be lucky but they don't return my calls. Be warned, Whoever and wherever you buy from make sure that ou pay at least part of the deposit by credit card. Then you have the credit card company's guarantee, and they will refund your money if need be. If, like us, you pay by cheque you have no one to help you when dishonest people refuse to give you your money back.0 -

Hi
Recently converted an existing conservatory, wanted the new tiled roof style and to put Aluminium Bifold doors in. The tiled roof part was very expensive and pushed me over my budget, a lot more than my fabulous bifolds. Luckily we used SlideorFold for our bifolds, the guys where very helpful and explained that by using a local carpenter we could convert the roof for half the cost and end up with a more traditional look, they did say carpenters have been building roofs for years and normal tiles look better and last longer. All finished looks fab and we saved thousands of pounds.0 -
You seem to have a real thing about bifold doors.0

Hi,
Just looking at replacing our Conservatory Roof with a tiled roof and insulated ceiling (not stone but one of those light weight versions).
Options we have been given has been:
A. Use current metal roof frame and replace with a SupraLite Thermal Roof. (Cheap Option)
B. Complete removal of the roof structure and replace with a wooden frame and strengthen uprights. (Expensive Option)
Only for option B was a building inspector required.....
We wish to fit plasterboard ceiling inside and have been advised that if using metal frame this may cause condensation.
Any advise would be appreciated which option would be best.0 -

If you're replacing a glazed roof with a solid roof then technically you will need Building Regulations approval, as this is defined as an extension not a conservatory. Just ring up your local Building Control department and ask - don't just trust what the builder is telling you!
With the extra weight of the new roof you will also want to check that the existing conservatory foundations are adequate, and this is part of what Building Control will check. You will want to make sure there is good insulation in the new roof, otherwise your problem of too hot in summer and too cold in winter won't be solved.
I was watching a neighbours conservatory roof being replaced with a so called light weight roof. I noticed that they just attached wooden rafters from the wall to the top of the existing uPVC frame. The original conservatory did not even have the usual substantial aluminium extrusion beam on top of the uPVC window frames. Seems like a lot of weight to be placed on top of the uPVC frame.0
