Hi,
Work this one out, I can put the contents of my Guinea pigs hutch in my waste bin, the contents being, hay, wood shavings, newspaper and droppings.
But under no circumstances am I allowed to put any grass clipping in the waste bin.
I just don't understand the logic, hay is dried grass!

Indeed - don't expect any common sense."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

I used to work for my local council - everything about it was illogical and bureaucratic!0

I put the shavings, hay etc from my rabbits' cage into the green bin. Is this wrong? It's all organic waste that will rot down the same as food waste and garden clippings I thought.0

I wish the government would set standards for waste collection.
The variations between areas is absurd.
When the started recycling in our area it was optional and you could put all types of recyclable waste in the bins with cans and bottles separated into their own bags inside.
Then they rolled it out as mandatory and you could no longer recycle glass and fabric/clothes.
And they say that the bins must be out by 7:00am to guarantee collection but must not be put out the previous evening and they are prepared to fine people who put them out early.
Why should some poor, disabled, 80 y/o have to get up before 7 on a freezing winter's morning when 9 times out of 10 the bins aren't emptied until gone midday? There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

I wish they would do that round here, bins put out 2 days before collection day, and others in the afternoon before collection day
Also why can't people take them in when they have been emptied? left out for days on end, even saw one woman for at least a week walk down the drive, put stuff into the bin then walk back into the house leaving the bin on the pavement.
They don't have to, just put them out on the day of collection before 10 a.m. if they are not emptied until afternoon.
.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
I can put unshredded paper in mine....but not shredded. Leaflet through the doors says no envelopes....Council website says yes!?0

Our Council gets that right. Elderly people who can't manage can register with them and the binmen collect the bins from the storage area.0 -

This is exactly the opposite of my council (Gateshead). I can add grass cuttings into the green bin but not waste from my wife's pet rabbits.
I ask every year when I go to the local flower festival in case they change the rules. Every year I have the same discussion with whoever is on the stand about what the difference is between grass that has dried out after i have cut it and hay. Never had a sensible answer yet.
For the most part, I have to make a trip every week to the local tip (i.e. recycling centre) and put the rubbish into the "Landfill" skip (there is way too much material to try composting).0 -
Could be a number of reasons. Is this a general waste bin? Grass goes slimy and stinks to the heavens. If they incinerate it perhaps they are concerned that if everyone did it it would affect the incinerator's efficiency. Dried hay would be fine in an incinerator.
But yes you are right there is a lot of inconsistency and confusing information out there. I have got a bugbear about environmental decision making and communication. If they explained why, people would be a bit more helpful and understanding. However the chances are that decision has been taken by someone with very little or no professional knowledge, based on information that wasn't complete or they didn't understand themselves.I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off

We used to carefully sort recycling stuff into various recycling bags. Until we saw what they were doing. Binman empties all of the bags into a big wheelie bin and then the wheelie bin is emptied into the recycling truck.
I am convinced it is so that the council can tick boxes on a central goverment form. They can say truthfully that they collect segregated recyclables.
