I wish the government would set standards for waste collection.

The variations between areas is absurd.

When the started recycling in our area it was optional and you could put all types of recyclable waste in the bins with cans and bottles separated into their own bags inside.

Then they rolled it out as mandatory and you could no longer recycle glass and fabric/clothes.

And they say that the bins must be out by 7:00am to guarantee collection but must not be put out the previous evening and they are prepared to fine people who put them out early.

Why should some poor, disabled, 80 y/o have to get up before 7 on a freezing winter's morning when 9 times out of 10 the bins aren't emptied until gone midday?

I found out (through MSE actually) that out GREEN bin (garden waste) goes into landfill

THE SAME LANDFILL THAT OUR BLACK BIN (non compostable) rubbish goes into..

but woe betide me if I put 'black' bin waste in the 'green' bin - or vice versa
Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY

    Thats odd.

You normaly diverts garden waste from landfills. When garden waste decomposes in landfills it produces large amount of methane. A powerfull greenhouse gas.

That does not apply to all councils as some (ours included) actually sell the compost they produce from garden waste.

We've got a green wheely bin for our normal rubbish, a grey bin for recycling and a brown bin for our green garden waste, youd have thought someone at the council could have used the green connection when allocating the different bins.

Does anyone know who decides what is the proper bin size for a given property/occupancy?
Every fortnight, without exception, my bin is overflowing. Up until last week we managed to squeeze everything in, but not close the lid (last week we had to leave two bags beside the bin: I'll come back to that). When I called the council to ask for a larger bin, their only response was that I have the correct size bin for up to five people (currently 2 adults, 2 kids, baby expected in Sept). Clearly I need a bigger bin; I already recycle everything that they permit, but this 'correct size' isn't big enough; and come Sept the new baby will be filling almost half of it (from experience) with dirty nappies.
Who is it that decides what size of bin is 'correct', and how out of touch with reality are they?
As to the bags left beside the bin, they weren't collected; instead they put a sticker on that said they were reducing the amount of waste by not collecting it. SERIOUSLY?! How does not collecting it reduce the amount of waste? I'm still producing it!
Naturally I'm now involved in their complaints procedure; and I can see it may take some time...

Don't know what your limits are in your area but in Sheffield you don't get a bigger bin or an extra one unless you have a household of more that 6 people. They don't say if it's 6 or above or jusr more than 6, nor do they state if they include little people in that or if it's just the grow'd ups!

Could you please post a picture or point me in the direction of the council with those stickers. We are always after do's and don'ts for teaching materials.

We have one of those half size bins for landfill waste, a tiny one! Large brown bin for garden waste, large black for paper, large green for plastic and cans.

Do not get me started on this, it is physically IMPOSSIBLE to manage with a tiny half size wheelie a fortnight with a BABY. She goes through about 5 a day (9 month old). That's 70 nappies a fortnight, it takes up about 3/4ths of the tiny landfil bin. PLUS!!! My plastic AND paper bin are always full too.

I recycle as much a humanly possible but I cannot manage without loading up the car and dumping black bags at the dump. I can't imagine how hard it is with with more kids!

It's York council. I'll add a photo just as soon as I can. Tried a couple of things, but doesn't seem like I can from my iPhone...
