Stamp Price Rise 1 April. Stock Up Now! Plus £2 off at WHSmith

What's the deal?

From the 1 April stamp prices will be rising. Yet crucially, stamps no longer display the price on them, only whether they are first or second class. This means you can stock up now at the current, lower price and they will still be valid even after the price increases.

The Details.

The price increases, from April 1, are:
  • Standard Letters - 1st Class from 32p to 34p, 2nd Class from 23p to 24p.
  • Larger Letters - 1st Class from 44p to 48p, 2nd Class from 37p to 40p.
So, make sure the stamps you buy now just say 1st or 2nd class, rather than showing the price you bought them for. That way you can stock up now to save.

That's the simple bit. Now, to save even more....

Grab an extra £2 off at WHSmith

WHSmith is offering an extra 200 clubcard points (worth £2) when you spend over a fiver in store. You should be able to use this against stamps though some MoneySavers have reported that they haven't been able to. WHSmiths were unable to confirm.

Update Note 30 March 2.41pm. Many people have successfully been using the voucher on stamps - as noted below. Having contacted Smiths a number of times to confirm this, it hadn't deign to reply. So as there's no specific prohibition on using stamps in the voucher's own terms and conditions.

Today I mentioned it on Radio 2 and it swiftly called to say the voucher couldn't be used on stamps. Obviously, even though it has worked for many, I can't suggest using it; however I have kept the link and the info here for you interest, and in case you choose to use the voucher for others things.

To get the point bonus, simply print this voucher and hand it in when you make your purchase.

How to get a WHSmith clubcard

For this offer to work, you need to be a clubcard holder, signed up to its clubcard distribution list. To get a Clubcard, you can either pick up one in store for free, or go here to register online. To sign up to the distribution list send an email to clubcard@whsmith.co.uk with your name, address, Clubcard number and email address.

T's and C's of the voucher
  • The voucher entitles you to the Clubcard bonus points shown when the indicated spend threshold has been met in a single transaction, available until 30 June 2007.
  • (Offer is not valid in station, airport, hospital workplace stores, motorway service stations or any other outlet centres).
  • Cannot be exchanged for any other merchandise.
  • Voucher has no cash value.
  • Only one voucher per Clubcard Customer will be honoured. Points may be deducted from a Clubcard account if more than one voucher is redeemed per promotion.
  • May not be combined with any other offer or voucher. Only unaltered vouchers will be accepted. Bonus points will be awarded to instore purchases only until 30 June.

    It's that time of year again - Royal Mail postage prices go up from 2nd April.

    So, buy any stamps you may need on Saturday 31st March at the latest (don't rely on the shops that open on Sunday having any left).

    Standard (small) letters go up from 32p to 34p for 1st class and 23p to 24p for 2nd class.

    Larger letters increase from 44p to 48p for 1st class; 37p to 40p for 2nd class.

    As most stamps say 1st or 2nd, you can carry on using them after the price increase.
  • If you buy 1 book of 1st class and 1 book of 2nd class at whsmiths it comes to £6.60,use your 200 point coupon!!

    once have the stamps that say 1st or 2nd on them

    you can "use" the stamps to pay for postage on parcels etc at your local post office and they are redeemed at the current value (not the price you paid)

    I got a load of stamps when superdrug had money off and still use them for paying postage on stuff I send through ebay ;)

    The Post Office also do a £1.36 "book" of 4 stamps:
    - 1 x "1st" 32p->34p
    - 1 x "1st LARGE" letter 44p->48p (ie 9% increase, ie biggest potential saving)
    - 1 x "2nd" 23p->24p
    - 1 x "2nd LARGE" letter 37p->40p
    ie going up 10p overall = 7.3% increase saved.

    I'll probably place an online order with some 100x sheets for over £35 (P&P free) and get some credit card cashback too.

    You can also buy unfranked second class stamps on Ebay for on average £15.00 for a hundred. First Class stamps also available.
  • Just checked the WHS Clubcard rules and should point out -

    "Are there any restrictions?
    Points will not be awarded on and cannot be redeemed against, purchases of gift vouchers, charity products, stamps, National Lottery products, phonecards, book tokens, theatre tokens, tobacco, cigarettes and certain other goods that may be notified from time to time. "

    £2 off a £5 purchase is still a great deal but unfortunately not on stamps.

    Regards

    Jon
