I have a personal policy of never accepting any underpaid postal items (even if there is a cheque for a £1M in it!). I will take the surcharge notice to the delivery office and ask to have a look at the item. This will tell me who it is from and I give them the address to be returned to the sender.

PS. I don't need any more postage stamps as I still have some £80 worth of 1st class stamps which I bought for 26p and 2nd class stamps which I bought for 19p years ago!

Are Europe stamps going up in price as well? Just asking because when I sent OH to stock up on stamps just now he bought a sixpack of them as well, only that they do not say E on them just 44p. Should he have them exchanged for the E stamps?

    The bad news:

Sorry - I'm too late for the recent increase, but this tip may help the next time it happens.

Yes, the Europe stamps have gone up in price.

If a stamp says 44p, that's what it worth after the price increases. So you will need to add postage to a 44p stamp for it to work after the price rises.

The good news - a workaround for the future:

The basic E stamp is the same value as the 1st class large letter rate. I've checked with my local post office, and they said I could use the stamps interchangeably. The 1st class large stamps have no monetary value on them, so effectively increase in value after the price rise. So if you use the 1st class large stamps you should have some degree of protection at the next price increase.

Hope this makes sense and is useful!
