Don't forget to take the battery off before they pick it up.

Road tax is an entirely separate issue to integral parts of the car like wheels and batteries. Cars are not normally sold with masses of raod tax on them and most buyers would expect to have to pay tax within a month or two at most, unless agreed beforehand. It should really have been specifically agreed as to whether you would include the remainder of the road tax or not, it is not obligatory and not an integral part of the car. Depending on the price of the car, I would not be giving £180 away as a gift to the buyer.
Perhaps you could agree to a price for the tax ? I do not believe you HAVE to provide the buyer with 9months free road tax as neither party actually clarified it was included. If I buy a used car I ask how much tax is left and if its included.

Cheap and miserable .... I would tell you to keep the car ... If I bought a car and then came to collect and the SCAMMER then informed me tax wasnt included no matter what I agreed I would offer less and then walk away.

Road Tax is not part of a car and is usuallynot included in a sale so I don't think it is "cheap and miserable" not to include it, and definitely not a scam. In fact, if the car was sold really cheaply, it is probably not worth the OP s while to let the £180 go like that- I certainly would not just give £180 away for nothing. If its a £20K car, thats a different matter.
The buyer actually sounds likethey are cheap and miserable and opportunistic, to be honest, just like you, legionaire.........

So road tax is not usually included, on what vast experience of buying and selling cars do you base this. The seller is being dodgy by not pointing out when the car was being viewed that he wasnt including the tax unless it was paid for ... Road tax on display in the car at the time is part of sale unless otherwise stated ... guy comes to pay for car and is told ohh I want more money if you want the tax .... TOTAL CHANCER !!!!!

Every car that people I know have bought has included some form of tax,
be that a couple of months or close to a year.

Every car I've seen for sale has had some amount of tax included, bar new ones
or ones that have been sorned

To say road tax is not part of the car, is neither here nor there, it's part of the
sale unless explicitly excluded from the sale.

The OP should stop being such a meiser, if he told the buyer the tax wasn't
included, I'm sure any offers made would reflect this.

If its got tax in the screen then i would assume it comes with that tax, Unless you were selling it for scrap and actually said before i had even started to look you were cashing the tax in.

Imagine buying a car, You doing the deal. Seller says come back tomorrow to collect it. You say but i can drive it away now im insured for it.

You say oh no you cant drive it away, Im taking the engine out, Its not included in the sale.

Nonsense. The chancer is the person expecting a £180 freebie. But I agree it should have been clarified explicitly. And actually, over my lifetime I do have considerable experience of buying and selling cars, alebit just for myself. I don't expect £180 freebies from people who may have made an error in not being explicit about the tax, particularly if I did not bother to clarify the tax issue. Most tax I would expect as a freebie is a month or two. If the car is expensive, thats another matter. Tax is not an integral part of a car like an engine and you would not take the disc off when someone comes to view, esp if it was onthe street, as it would not be legal for it to be there without a valid tax disc.

The buyer could just be telling the truth that they assumed the tax disc was included - they're not necessarily a chancer, scam artist, etc. Sounds like they're just a bit dozy and didn't think to ask. Buyer and seller each assumed something different, neither clarified.

OP - there's no set rule so it's up to you whether it's included or not. If the buyer no longer wants the car because they had misunderstood, let them off the sale and re-advertise. Not sure what else you can do...

If you said in the ad taxed till ** or they viewed it with rent on the window, you are duty bound to sell it with the tax. Only if you specifically excluded tax while negotiating the price do you have any right to cash it in yourself.
Remember, it is very easy for buyers to either walk away or become persistent nags if they are unhappy.
