I suppose these m/c's still require 2 inlets like a sky box does.....

So I would be able to record multiple programs and watch one channel while viewing another in an apartment with a communal dish? so fed up since moving here with my Sky and finding out I can't

RS sell a 500GB Humax FV+ box for £150 which is half the price of the Humax 500GB YouView box. Is £150 for catch-up TV which Sky and Freeview will be offering for free soon, good value? I get mine through a £30 Raspberry Pi running XBMC.

Yes you can by non HD boxes with no internet functionality cheaper (£159), hows that relevant?
Sky are offering nothing for free and never will.

So a Humax 500gb HD box compared to the youview would be around the £30 extra that you spent on additional hardware.

Sounds about right, this is a no brainier if you were about to buy a freeview HD PVR, the youviews are £190+vat so will be around £250-260? on amazon pretty soon.

Fair point, I missed the HD capability. RS take £229 for the HD version. And I should have said 'no extra charge' for Sky, but free from Freeview.

    And £40 change.

I suspect they'll be much cheaper than that fairly soon. I can't see why anyone would buy one for any more than the standard Freeview+ HD box when they get catch-up capability.

Blackpool_Saver - NO! You need to remember the difference between Freeview and Freesat. You say you have a communal dish - that points at a satellite. FreeVIEW boxes connect to an aerial.
SATELLITE signals (Sky or Freesat) need one cable per channel being watched/recorded, Freeview doesn't.
YOU can buy a Freesat box, connect it to your single feed, and record ONE AT A TIME, but you can't watch something else on it at the same time.
