Buyer has gone off one one after I requested their contact details!

Is Ebay only used by idiots now? After selling an item, I used Ebay to get their contact details so the courier had a mobi number. They live in a flat in poor part of London, so I didn't want the item left in the communal hallway and the courier would SMS the time of their delivery 'slot'.
Now the buyer has kicked off about 'going behind their back'
I expect I'll get a neg. Reckon it's time pack in as a seller.

Personally if a seller I had purchased something from was going to give my mobile number to the courier, I would hope that they would ask me first. I wouldn't "go off on one" if they didn't, but I would think it good practice to ask first.0

Which poor part of London was this?
Personally, I wouldn't want someone else giving out my personal contact details to anyone else without them checking with me first.
Why didn't you contact the buyer to arrange this?0 -

How would you like it if I passed tour phone number on to a third party without your consent?'The More I know about people the Better I like my Dog'

Agree with others - people usually only use the contact details form when they have a problem.0

By using eBay you accept that your trading partners have access to your phone number, if you don't like it don't use eBay, simple as.
Plenty of websites have the phone number as a required field (including Amazon) and for the simple reason a business may need to contact their customer directly.
OP if you do get bad feedback, depending upon it's content, CS would most likely remove after reviewing the customers messages (if sent via the eBay messaging service).
There is also an option that means the customer must provide a number during Checkout but this of course may not be beneficial if you don't require a number for every order. In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0 -
You really should have asked them first.0

Even if they were trying to deliver something to you?
I once had a buyer complain that I'd broken the data protection act by having their name and address on a parcel..."Love you Dave Brooker! x"
