This is a prime example of certain customer expectations, customers complain endlessly that deliveries are difficult (some much so you get the odd news article about it) so you obtain a number to ensure a more convenient delivery and the customer complains...In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0

By using a site, you appreciate that it's necessary for the driver to be able to contact the person in question.
I had a company go into one as I got Addy Lee bikes to deliver a package for me and gave the mobile number of the person it was going to (small company). I didn't reject to do another order, but did state quite clearly that under the circumstances, it's in my interests and theirs to have a poc in a multiple-occupancy office.

No this is about not passing on certain information on to third parties without the customers consent. Sending a message via ebay requesting this is not exactly difficult. Shame you seem to have missed that point.
The customer gave consent to share the number with the seller when they clicked the Agree button for eBay's UA during registration and a business is permitted under data protection laws to share required customer data with agents that act as an extension of their business to fulfil the contract, i.e a courier. In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0 -

And just to add, businesses are trying to be efficient especially when customers expect quick dispatch. A member of staff sending and replying to a message when an automated process will do the same is inefficient and may slow down dispatch if the customer doesn't check their mails often.
If a seller asked me for my number on eBay I'd be wondering why they didn't already have it and knowing how eBay works would be annoyed if it delayed dispatch by 2 days because I wasn't checking my mails. In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0 -
And to add again Oliver, you realise Amazon give your number to the seller regardless and it's only eBay where the seller has to request this.In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0

I've sent many many parcels with couriers and if I don't have the customers phone number I always put mine. Not once has it caused a problem and not once have I been contacted by any of the couriers trying to get hold of the customer!0

It's presumptious.
However, if they contacted me to discuss options then I would be ok.0
