Do what I have done hundreds of times and just put your own number! Never caused me a problem, ever!

So what happens when the delivery driver rings you for directions to an address you've never been to?

Its never, ever, ever, ever happened (as I said in a previous post)!! I've even done it for overseas deliveries and never, ever, ever, ever had a problem!

Did I mention its never, ever, ever, ever caused a problem?

And I'm not talking about one or two times here!

Lucky you. When I lived in a flat I was always getting calls from delivery people who could not find my address or the entrance to the building. If an ebay seller was sending something and put their own details it would have caused a problem deliverying the item. Your experience does not equal everyone elses.

I do not see a problem with passing the number to the delivery company who are working for the seller to provide the item they paid for. People are way over the top with things like this and need to get a life.

Interesting points of view. I 'street viewed' the buyers address and it wasn't too clever, with take-ways and taxi firms, then flats above, hence not wanting the package to be left with anyone who was just milling around.

As it happens, one of the buyers feedback messages called him 'Mr Angry' :)
  • When I send something by courier, as i did today, on my listing I always make sure the buyer knows i will need their number to give to the courier.

Next time OP stick a few lines on your listing reminding the buyers of this and it'll save lots of hassle and at least you will have some comeback if they do kick off.

It would be reasonable to ask permission. Not everybody is automatically happy with their contact details being out there without them knowing about it - my parents are ex-directory, for instance.

As Lovinit says, it's making the assumption that was wrong here. OP should really have asked first.

I've sent many many parcels with couriers and if I don't have the customers phone number I always put mine. Not once has it caused a problem and not once have I been contacted by any of the couriers trying to get hold of the customer!
I also do this. With carriers a phone number is normally a required field. A very small percentage of deliveries have problems. Only once in hundreds of deliveries has the carrier called me. I was then able to contact the customer to sort out the problem.

I would consider it good manners to ask first. Same as if a mutual aquaintance asks for a friend's phone number I'd check with the friend before giving it out.

That's without any reference to the data protection act which I suspect if you give YOUR customer's number to a third party (the delivery company) YOU are breaching the DPA.

I was going to mention the DPA but wasn't sure when it applied (companies have to register with Data Commissioners, I believe, etc.). Look it up and see whether it applies to you, OP.

If a seller wants to give out the mobile number to the courier and doesn't want to delay posting, then they could mention this in their listing under shipping information. And say that buyers who don't want their phone number given to the courier can request this by adding a note along with payment.

We've seen in this thread that some, but not all, buyers will prefer to be asked first, and be unhappy if they are not. If a seller just gives out buyer's mobile phone numbers to couriers without asking, then they risk unhappy buyers and poor stars and even possibly poor feedback.
