I am studying for the FSA's financial regulations exam at the moment
Having said that, banks are allowed to make a profit from penalty charges (and clearly do) despite what the presenter said. One reason I have heard is for a deterrent - if the charges were set at 38p or whatever it cost the bank then many more people might be happy to go overdrawn.
Absolutely not.
Banks are allowed to recoup their costs and no more than that. Wherever you have gleaned otherwise, you need to go back and re-read it, or to pull up whoever told you this.
I suggest a long and thorough read of Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Co. Ltd. v. New Garage and Motor Co. Ltd. (1915) before replying. ;-)0 -

I have been a regular contributor on the bank charges threads for a very long time, long before they had their own bank charges forum set up.
In fact, I took part in the original TMcD programme Martin did back in July.
When CAG took off in such a huge manner, I found myself without the physical time to do both, but still like to have a look when I can.0 -

Sorry but i have been a branch manager for Barclays for many years and the above is completely wrong.
You need a name and either post code OR Sort code to locate someone. You do not need both without a doubt. Or you can locate them by account number or Barclaycard number.
I am sure what was shown goes on in all the banks to some extent. The bank made huge problems for itself when it re introduced bonuses which directly relate to a product sold. People are naturally going to then try and sell what pays them the biggest bonuses which isnt necessarily the right product for the customer.
Monthly bonuses were introduced before and all sorts of miss-selling went on. Loads of people got sacked and we then changed to half yearly bonuses. these related to your overall performance over a long period.
There is an incredible pressure to hit targets so I can see why some people take the easy option and cheat. You also tend to find lots of backstabbing with staff trying to steal each others sales as well.0 -

By simply refusing to confirm ANY of your details - they could be calling on a scam line from Nigeria.
I always ask for a UK geographical phone number (NOT 0870) and a VERIFIABLE full name of a person, and will ring them back and will only speak with that person.
It is absolute rubbish for them to say that they can not give you a full name. If the matter were to end up in court, then you would look a bit silly telling the judge that 'John' told you nothing was wrong.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.
