I was amazed watching the show but not really suprised.

I realise that Barclays are going to come under a lot of attack but I am sure the Halifax/Royal Bank of Scotland are much more ruthless than was shown on whisatleblower.

You just have to look at the profits they declared to realise that the banks are not there for there customers anymore

In Martins words. They try to screw us and we should to screw them straight back....(ooo.eer missus! it was something like thayt anyway lol)

You can find an edited edition of the programme:

They also covered insider fraud in a big way but it's not in the edited edition above.
  • I think it's more like what immoral_angeluk says... it takes a few months to come through, but they do have them done every time.

I did hear of one person who was hired on at Barclays, and about a month later his checks came through, and it turned out he had a couple of CCJs. He was let go immediately. So yeah, you can probably work there for a while before you get caught. But your first few months are training anyway.

So the reporter has just taken the fact that she started work before the check was complete, and turned it from something common and normal, into something TV-worthy.

The whole show just seemed to me like they were taking mundane things and trying to make them exciting. Like when the police came into the cafe, and it went all slow-motion and in sepia tones to make it more dramatic... then it turned out they were there to arrest someone else. Talk about scraping the barrell!

Can't disagree one the other points as your husband obviously knows more than I do about it, but must disagree with the above...

Unless the reporter was lying then 3 jobs were obtained without criminal reccord checks.

Later in the programme, they quoted Barclays as saying "we do check criminal reccords of all staff, but not as quickly as we should" Either that was to cover their back and they don't really, or it was the truth.

Either way the people in question managed to get and keep jobs for months without them being done.

I think i need to get a machine that records phone calls when i ring up my bank? I have had awfull service with them for the past umpteen years and had incomplete bank statements missing aprox £200 of charges off, its all done and dusted now but they just annoy the hell out of me

I can confirm that the bank I worked for didnt do any Crminal background Checks. They checked Credit reference agencies to see if staff had any credit problems but they didnt run any police checks (and I know because I was part of the recruitment team for advisors). I also know that they were going to "brush under the carpet" an incident where a team manager defrauded the company of almost £100k. It only went to court when the really high ups got to know. They also took on lots of foreign students who were at the local university and absolutely no checks whatsover were done for these.

Anyone who is paying for digital TV via Virgin should use the ON DEMAND service. the BBC have the show on there for free and could be viewed at anytime.

VERY poor attempt by Barclays to look like they are taking the matter seriously, wonder which office bod posed as the “journalist” !
 It’s hard enough remembering my opinions - without remembering my reasons for them
