    Hi Eneymeeny,

As this isn't strictly an Old Style topic I've moved it over to the holiday's board to see if you can get some more replies.

  • Menus from your local takeaway are handy if they are in both english and the language of wherever you are going.

Especially good in China you can show it to the restaurant and they can point at which ones are similar to what they have.

The restaurant staff seem to find them amusing and often want to keep them for future use.

Not so useful now phones translate for you but dont always have a signal, want to wave your phone about or have it disappear into the kitchen.

Thanks for all of the useful (and not so useful!;)) ideas. The menu idea is certainly something that I wouldn't have thought of but I can see that it's a good idea.
The torch one too. I've resolved to take one of those 'press lights' to use as a torch next time, after the extractor fan ran for ages when someone visited the bathroom during the night:( Maybe one in the bathroom and one by the bed...?
Trouble is all of this 'travelling light' and restrictions on what you can carry! Another advantage of having holidays in this country:D
Ooh, and can I add cheap cetrizine tablets to cope with skin irritations, sunburn, bites, hay fever etc.? Usually cheaper from supermarkets, Home Bargains etc than buying abroad.

Yeah, this is what happens when you do that!
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I always keep a torch in my bag anyway, never know when it could be handy.

A 10ft length of plastic coated string.

    This has been used:
    - as a clothes line.
    - to tie beach umbrellas onto mopeds.
    - a guy rope for our beach tent
    - to tether an inflatable toy to the beach.
    - to lower beer into a deep hole to keep them cool.
    - to secure a dodgy ferry toilet door
    - to secure a dodgy hotel room door
    - an impromptu solar powered direction finding device.
    - a means of keeping the children entertained.
    - to tie a broken case shut.
    - to mend a broken mosquito net.
    - is anyone still reading this crap?
    - to secure a window that was going bang bang bang all night.
    - to be lent to dozens of people and earned lots of goodwill points.

So little space, so many uses.
