    The bag plus the passenger's feet need to fit under the seat in front.
    • If they would, then the stewardess was correct.
    • If they wouldn't then the passenger was right.
    (Allowable carry-on bag sizes can be too big to fit under seats, so it may not be a matter of the passenger taking on an oversize item.)

    because many passengers are thick or stupid, whereas you are probably almost perfect ;-)
