A general rule of thumb in England is that it's a class thing

working class shoes on unless wearing a nice pair of slippers and puffing on a pipe.

middle class shoes off because that's what posh people do.

upper class shoes on unless you want the boy to clean them for you.

Oh and what is it with white or cream carpet? It's like salad spinner just why?

Middle class - 'house shoes' - it's what we had to change into at school in the 60s to protect the parquet floor.

I have a "no shoes" policy up stairs cos my carpet is cream. All kids have to kate their shoes off in my house cos they seem to carry the most horrendous c*** on them (mud, sand, grit). In my new pad I have laminate which is easier to clean but I'll still have the no shoes policy as I don't want my new flooring scratched.

Simple - my house my rules. If they don't like it they know what to do!

When men pee the spray. If you use a loo in a no shoe household then walk around you are likely taking as much of that around the house and on your feet as what your shoes go in. While i am not a clean freak, having friends piddle on my fee does not appeal any more than wearing shoes in the house.

There should be a mat and slippers outside the loo for this reason. That's what we do.

  • My OH is shoes on. I'm shoes off. He cleans the floors, I don't. Simples ;)

If I'm honest I just like being barefoot :)

We have carpet so always take shoes off. Just becauae you cant see the dirt it must be there. You wouldnt want to lick your shoes would you so why wipe all that bacteria on the carpet where you might sit or play with the kids etc ? yuck.
I have to say a workman came recently and left his shoes on and left a big black oils stain on the carpet. Then another came and spend a while taking his shoes of nicely and putting them to one side. I think its just polite.
However I used to work for a company who would not allow the workmen to take off their shoes for safety reasons and the client wouldnt allow them in as she had strong religious beliefs around weraing shoes in the house. There was stand off because neither side would relent. Must have been in the days prior to shoes covers ..... !

    Its a weird one...

I mostly take them off at home...all shoes live in our porch anyway so most people would take them off without thinking or being asked. I would never ask somebody too either. My Dad never takes his off at somebodies house...but then he never has dirty soles and will make sure he dries them on a mat if it has been raining outside. I mostly take them off at my mum and dads house or at my grandads house, not because I have to...just because I feel cosy at their houses and I like to sit with my feet up on sofa so must take them off...I always take them off at my friends houses (unless a party) as they would at mine but then I guess we are a generation who grew up taking them off at others houses...I wouldn't take them off at a party though. At all my aunts and uncles houses nobody else does so I don't there...

I guess my rule of thumb is that if the host is bare foot and there are shoes on a rack or by the door uit is pretty obvious that shoes are supposed to be taken off in that house.

At school we had to take them off for assembly...weird! Perhaps this is why kids do it???

I've never asked anyone to remove their shoes when they come into my house, although some do it automatically, besides some people have disgusting feet that smell and taking off their shoes would expose this and IMO that is a lot worse than keeping shoes on. If i did have a brand new white fluffy shaggy carpet then perhaps if someone came in with exceptionally filthy shoes i would maybe take them to another room. But most people don't and most people always give their feet a good rub on the mat before entering so no i don't ask people to remove their shoes.

Slippers other people use appeal even less, i would refuse them. As i have low immunity i get infections easily, also in a slipper would easily pass them on.

Bare feet i like being in...just under no illusion it is cleaner. I sweat through my feet and put damp, inevitable film of dirt onto the floor i step on, plus the other unhygenic things.....i w
K barefoot in myhouse where my doogs walk barefoot. I also walk barefoot in my garden, with the dogs.
