Sadly not Gally - size was all important :rotfl:Here too. I do think about roof tiles flying off in this sort of weather, after seeing them all over the streets during various high-wind events. One of those lands on you, you're a goner ...

We've seen some extreme weather in our 10 years here. We used to worry about high winds to begin with as we're on the top of a hill. However, the surrounding farm and houses shelter us and we've only ever lost the top of a bird feeder in all that time.
Thank you for your lovely comments on the painting. There may be another cat in the offing - I'll keep you posted.

I've just got up to date with everything you've been doing and I have to agree, even when you're in budget you feel as though you're overspending. It's good though as it shows your spending habits have changed for the better!xx

Hello there Sassy. You're quite right, I'm a much more conscious spender these days :rotfl:

It was the WI AGM last night and things got very heated. A representative from the Federation was there and questioned our decision to donate to local community groups - there was uproar!
Loaves:- I have another 2 days booked in for the job
- baked Pear & Almond Cakes as I got lots of lovely pears in my veg box this week. I was a bit worried about the number of eggs in the recipe but they turned out really well
- cleaned 2 rooms
- made Haddock & Leek Au Gratin with Sweetcorn Mash for supper. Except I used coley instead of haddock as that's what I had in. Delicious and full of lots of lovely veg. There's some left over for tonight too
- £1 for a raffle ticket at WI. No charge for coffee and cake this time
and a friend drove.
Stay warm

I've ceased to be a member of our local WI - when going becomes a chore instead of a pleasure, something has gone wrong! However, I gave a talk at a local-ish branch last week on behalf of a local community group (www.gloucestershirebundles.org) (I was roped in 2 nights before the talk, so it was somewhat ad-libbed!) - and was very taken with their group. A younger group (I was the youngest in my old one - and I'm mid 40s), newly formed - and full of life and enthusiasm - for things other than flower arranging and pictures of local castles (both have their place, but....) - although crafts (including baking and jam making) feature highly. They donated their raffle proceeds to Bundles, and Bundles also gained about 4-5 regular volunteer offers and several more one-off offers and lots of other remote-help offers from that evening - which was fantastic. It has made me re-think WI - it *is* fab from a social point, so I may look another time at other local ones for something which is a better fit for me.
I thought there was some sort of Fed rule about WI donating to other charitable concerns - or do you mean donating goods, rather than cash? I have vague memories of debating it at a committee meeting some time ago

I'm usually more of a lurker on here but interested in the WI discussion. I've recently joined a new one set up in my local area. We have only been going for a few months so have had some federation help in getting set up and we've been told we can't donate directly to other charities as we are considered a charity as well. However we were told there are ways to get around the rules. Like if a speaker asked their fee be donated we need to pay the speaker directly then they donate the fee to the relevant charity. Also I thought we could donate raffle money as long as everyone that bought a ticket was aware the money would be going to another charity and not the WI.Starting Mortgage Balance: £264,800 (8th Aug 2014)

Our WI is quite a young one too and I think that does make a difference. We do all sorts of interesting things from wine tasting to sculpture and usually the meetings are great fun.
Wonderful that your local group were so supportive of Bundles. I'd definitely think about joining them - they sound fab. And it's a relatively cheap way of socialising and getting out of the house.

Hello egoode  Lovely to see you.
WI Head Office have confirmed the situation for us. We cannot donate to other registered charities as the Charities Commission rules don't allow this (we did know this and had chosen causes which weren't registered). We can donate to causes which align to our constitution. All of our causes do align so there is no problem. I don't think our Federation Mentor was very well informed on this particular issue and set some hares running.
Here's the official guidance if anyone's interested http://www.thewi.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/9629/A-WI-Guide-to-Raising-Funds-for-Projects,-Causes-or-Appeals.pdf
All's well that end's well - it was just funny to see the WI getting so animated. Jam spoons at dawn :rotfl:

I worked yesterday and took out my first tour. The walk was so beautiful with the crab apple blossom in full bloom and carpets of bluebells everywhere.
I've been booked to take out several more tours over the coming weeks so it will be lovely to see how things change over the seasons.
The day was very busy and I don't think I drank enough fluids. I had a terrible headache by the end of the day which is still with me todayOn the bright side, we went out for supper last night, as I didn't feel up to cooking, and have no firm plans for today so I can take it easy.
Hope you are all having a relaxing Sunday.
