long time lurker and very occasional poster.

Greyqueen, those peas make a fab pea and ham soup with a ham hock or bacon pieces in the slow cooker (or hob, i just love my sc).
also, plant them to get very decent pea shoots for use in salads/garnish or grow to full size for homegrown marrowfats.

Rebeccalb, you lucky thing. I would secretly love a crossbow! I could get some very fat and lazy pigeons for the kids tea. would have to get someone else to prep them though, I just couldn't I don't think.

Welcome to the club rebeccalb know what you mean we had that to over the winter back in 2010 we had days of no power. Thats, why I refuse to have an electric hob.no matter what happens at least we would have gas for a few days.
Thats what I prep for severe weather.and food prices.

I recently became involved with a socialist group and some of them were toss pots so I walked away. A friend of mine lives in a self Sufficient community and I know of a few more in the uk so I would go straight to them. They have the same values as I do. The only reason we havent joined one is the lack of employment surrounding them.

We had lovely day out today and gas a lovely walk on the beach.
Checked out the nw sea defenses in redcar and, there are no where near as I was told. You can see the ocean and to be honest makes out look a lot nicer. Of and there a lot more disabled ramps and the life boat jetty had been renewed. No pier has been built though, so pops it could b worth a visit.

Sorry about my spelling on my phone and it's a nightmare.

Understand what you mean about having a gas hob. Luckily when I moved into my rented flat last year it did have a gas cooker and hob, very thankful for it a couple of weeks ago. Was one of lucky ones as most people in the town have electric hobs. :(

Thanks for this tip. I have lots of seeds, pulses and grains for sprouting. They keep for years and will be a good source of vitamins if the shtf, especially the broccoli seeds which have unfortunately become very expensive. Sprouting peas would be a much cheaper alternative so I will add these to supplies.

ooh crossbow envy here too! many happy returns rebecca
With my sight and um.. dangerous history with powertools I don't think OH would let me loose with one sadly :(

GQ my greenhouse seems to have exploded overnight
I'll be out there most of the day tomorrow I think.

:T Very nice young sir can we have a step by step how to pretty please :D

I will defer this to OH as I'm also currently banned from using his hacksaw :o I'm not a disasterzone really when I can actually see I'm fine...

Elaine I lent my mum some of my library during the snow last year..she was practically suicidal by the time it thawed and has now banned me from lending her books again..
the psychological effects of a disaster would be hard going even for the most devout preppers
  • No hacksaw involved.

All I used was a craft knife, a separate craft knife blade, a drawing pin, a G-Cramp and a stapler.

I'm currently working on a different version, with a built in pot stand.

I've just phoned my DH to say goodnight (nightshift) and just slipped into the conversation that I quite fancied a crossbow...he laughed at me, as I knew he would them said hmmmm, maybe you could get me one for my birthday, we could get rid of those fat pigeons that the dog keeps barking at! lol.
    soooo, any recommendations??

bedsit bob, that looks fab. might get the kids to make one of those tomorrow!
D&DD, my girls have been going to the B&screw kids diy workshops and have been learning how to use power tools. aged 5 and 7 they can both now use a jigsaw, drill and electric screw driver, also hammer and nails. if you register online and book instore they're free and they do adults courses too ;)

OOh a crossbow, no more damned pigeons out the back if I had one - no they would probably be jettisoned into the next street over the bungalow at the back and lie there till I snook out in the dark to retreive them when all the security lights would come on :rotfl:

DD's fella was in the driving seat when we went out to Wales for the day last year and had to be threatened when a family of ducks crossed the road in the middle of a village - I simply pointed out you cannot create roadkill it has to happen by accident and I would take my car keys back off him - idle threat as I need his chaffeuring skills too much.

I digress, as a diet coke addict I have hundreds of those cans going through the house so if anyone wants on let me know! Im guessing its a little water heating stove run by candle power? Please put me out of my misery.

  • You are half right ginnyknit.

It is a stove, but it runs on Methylated Spirits, not candles.
