Ooh interesting. I wish I'd known that because the All American was a lot more expensive than a Presto. Though there is still the advantage that you don't need a gasket

I could not afford an all American and had to save for my presto. The postage cost me almost as much as the thing itself :( I am going to order another gasket this year and try to do it every other year. I think I read somewhere that they keep well in a sealed jar. No idea if that is right so another thing to look up.
  • Thank you grandma247 and maryb. Reason I asked is they have the 23qrt presto gauge model on Am**on uk for about £120 pp free, and another (new to me) uk site for about £109, which seem good prices compared with importing from US with very high postage plus duties.

The All American model was also available via am**on uk, delivery from US, but its double the price and the postage was over £50!

I've read that the gauge models need much closer watching/heat adjustment to maintain correct pressure than the weighted/jiggler models, as well as the annual gauge recalibrating issue and the gasket replacement, so was interested in your experiences. I discovered today that you can get a 5/10/15lb jiggler (regulator weight) add on for the Presto (from the States, about $11 - so under import charge limit) which others are using in conjunction with the gauge.

This means they don't have to worry about recalibrating the gauge - not so readily available over there now apparently, we're not the only one's having service cuts - as the weight becomes the master controller, and also gives you the audible signals that the right pressure is being maintained. Useful info about garage being able to check gauge though.

I do have a Prestige pressure cooker with the 5/10/15lb weights, but it's much smaller capacity that these American canners, plus I'm too nervous about the process to try it without the "proper" equpment. I've downloaded the Presto manual, so will have a read of that and see if it quells my fears.

    Thanks again.

Mines a Presto but I would have loved the all american..I have the book for it lol
Best thing I found as an added extra has been the plastic lids for my kerr jars which also fit onto the new kilner jars so when you open one you can seal it up again (I use the two piece lids)

Must use it more this year but my cooker has a gas hob and sadly the canner is a bit too heavy for it so its a bit of a balancing act to get it to sit right..I've had a whole pot of water go over before when I waterbathed the pears!! Obviously a design fault thats why it was so cheap but a bit of a pain..the grates that sit on it are wibbly IYKWIM (the cooker I mean)

I bought a few more preserving books while I was recuperating..and some more food storage ones :o
At least I can read them now :D:D

    I got Bread in a Bag 1 and 2
    simple recipes using food storage
I have the preppers cookbook on order...still!! I'm tempted to re-order it on the kindle just to get it but I find the formatting isn't always great for cookery books on it I prefer a real version to cover in cake :D

    Hello Mrs LW

Thank you, a teeny bit disappointed as I quite fancied the Rugged Vet! Never mind.. ;) Sigh.

Snow is melting here and we have sun!

Soil is frozen hard still, so can't do anything in the garden, my seedlings are getting leggy so have to re-pot soon.

Hope everyone is well and prepping hard, don't forget we lose an hour on Sunday night all, and it's getting lighter at last...

Spring has kind of sprung, although it's wearing thermals, 3 layers, a wooly hat, scarf and gloves at the moment.

    Take care all

I wonder if a garage could check the pressure on a Prestige pressure cooker somehow or is it just the gauge they can check? Because you can pick up old Prestige pressure cookers on Ebay for very little and it's quite handy to be able to do just one jar sometimes eg if I'm making chicken stock

Just ventured on one of the back road rat runs. Dear me - towering walls of snow on either side and barely room for one car - let alone space for 2 to pass!
Connection very slow yesterday. Was blaming Orange, the computer, the router... Did a ton of virus checks.... Then read there had been a massive cyber attack which had slowed connections worldwide - bringing more speculation about how you could bring down an enemy this way. So maybe the next war won't be nuclear but cyber.

If the pressure cooker works with weights, then wouldn't you just need to have weights checked for accuracy?

I dunno Bob I'm not the worlds most techie person :D
I'm sure once someone has explained it very simply for me I'll get the gist!

Just popped back on as I've noticed something new on Ebay..its probably been going a while but I've not seen it til now?

They have a new shipping thingy which allows you an international tracking number and pays customs all in one go so it may finally be do-able to import a canner from the states at a reasonable price.

I needed some widemouth pint jars *honest* so have given it a test drive with an order so will let you know how it goes.Shipping was extremely cheap so not sure wether thats a good thing or not..

I need my cousin to come visit!!
