    I've been Money Tipped!
Just popping in to say thank you Bob for the links to the paraffin lamps, just got mine this morning! Very good value! My dh is a very reluctant prepper but even he has to admit that the warnings of future power cuts are there in the media and he too remembers the power cuts of the 70's.

I have cut down from 3 freezers to 2 and have a dehydrator as a future source of food storage, can anyone offer ideas of a good book on using the dehydrator? Recipes etc.,

We have a camping stove and gas barbecue for cooking so ok hereI hope! Does anyone else (with a guiding/scouting background maybe) remember cooking pancakes over a night/tea light on a saucer under an upturned (empty and clean with holes punched in) golden syrup tin? The lid although small was perfect for cooking little pancakes in! Just grease it first! I have just bought a large tin of golden syrup in ready for said purpose! Now to cook up lots of flapjacks/biscuits to use up the syrup!:D Maybe not for me to eat as off to emergency appointment at dentist, been in pain for a little while and suspect it is an abcess again! :( What timing over a bank holiday!

Keeping warm will be a problem here as we only have gas central heating which requires an electric pump to work and electric fan heater. If only dh would get on board regarding a wood burner! My friend has one, out in the country so they get regular power cuts from time to time, she can cook on hers as well! I am green with envy!

I am still in shock at what has happened in Cyprus  Surely it's theft? Unreal! Those poor people! We don't have much in the way of savings and what we do goes towards paying down the mortgage! I have invested in some seeds from The Real seeds co and can't wait to get going. Some years ago we went to Cuba for a holiday and were very impressed with how they used every single and unlikely space to grow food in!

We have some more rotten weather coming, bad enough here but so much worse for those still waiting for the power to come back on and the farmers dealing with the tragic loss of livestock, we will all pay for this in the months to come I feel!
I seem to be holding my breath waiting for the next bad news!

Keep warm everyone and take care!

Catz I have a few including the Dehydrator Bible,Mary bell's dehydrator cookbook and some backpacking ones with a few bits in.
Getting started with it I'd look up dehydrate2store she has a website with videos etc and a utube channel in fact theres lots of vids on there to drool over.

Amazon is pretty good for letting you look at a book before you purchase it too so you can decide if the recipes are worth having.

Both the dehydrator bible and mary bell include pet recipes and pot pourri and suchlike and theres also a ton of free recipes to be found on the web :D

Hi everyone I am thinking of getting one of those wee camping stoves, and thank you for whoever posted about it. I have a bad memory, sorry about that. The wee seedlings on the windowsill are getting leggy as well:( Itching to be out working in the garden) On the other hand I feel so fortunate that we are not going through what so many people are, and am thankful to be warm safe fed and dry. Take care and keep warm Margaret x

Have thought about buying a pressure canner, but don't think I can justify the outlay at the moment. I believe alot of stuff can be waterbathed to store as long as it's pretty acidic. So fancy trying to bottle my HM version of "dolmio", at the moment I just freeze it, but it would be more convenient to just grab a jar-good way to use up excess toms from the GH (if we actually get a decent summer lol). Plus will free up space in the freezer.

For those wanting to preserve, I think this guy is excellent http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1409376095/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=103612307&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0789410532&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=17N6CWR0CXAY0KSAME3Z

His older book is broader in scope but more expensive and huge.

He has some meat recipes, fermenting recipes and dried meat recipes (salami type) as well as the normal jams, jellies and chutneys.
