We have much seedage on the window sills all over the house and He Who Knows is currently in the greenhouse planting out plug plants which will have to take thier chances if it gets colder again, we have no room indoors for them. Nice to hear from you again. Cheers Lyn and Dockyxxx.

I see the problem Mar. The trouble is apart from corned beef, tinned meat isnt that good unless you go to M&S. OH doesnt much like tinned fish, so what are the options, has anyone got a good idea?

I love my de-hydrator and wouldnt be without it. I have 3 tubs of dried veg and no more carrots etc filling up the freezer. Apart from the halogen I think its my best buy ever and its the £50 one from lakeland.

D&DD glad to hear you are better, its been a long road for you.

Think the government may have to re-think some of its proposals now after the Cross party committee decided the bedroom tax is flawed and will cost more than it saves - could have bl**dy told them that months ago.

Nipping to the market tomorrow before the 'End of the world shopping for easter' begins. Im juggling that much now I can't keep up with myself, every bargain I manage to get is a major victory.

The bank excelled themselves again yesterday so now have 2 investigations going as to what the hell they are upto. I got a text from them at 3pm - they had set up a SO from my account to pay Oh's loan :mad::mad: We have seperate accounts but I am third party on his for emergencies. Its now making me ill, every month a new !!!! up. Last month after he rang them for advice as his PPI had run out 2 months before the end of his loan they promptly sent all our accounts to collections. I was very calm on the phone yesterday despite shaking with rage and pointed out the error of their ways. I think I may have a major case against them with this and they are worried.

My god Mrs L - our front lawn is under 8" snow and the mower is in the shed behind a 2ft high drift. Different world!! I can see the main road from the window and the yellow flashing lights on the plough going up and down keeping it clear.
    I'm pondering the dehydrator.
HIIIII D3 ! lovely to see you back! :T
  • 2tonsils - have you any idea, from your sources, when the cold snap is due to end (more so for the Northern Ireland region) and if there's any more snow due?

More for information purposes - appreciated....

:D Hellooo my snowbound friend :D I was just reading about your question re the genny or dehydrator I think its probably best you make a list (you know we love a list!)
Write a column for and against I find its the easiest way when I'm trying to justify a large purchase

The genny would need to be serviced and you would still have to get fuel for it and possibly parts, once the dehydrator is purchased thats it really..that sort of thing

What appliances do you need during a powercut in a) hot weather b) cold weather etc if its just lights in cold weather a battery run led set may be an option if its a fridge in hot weather maybe you have a coolbox and icepacks you could keep frozen instead?

I have a pressure canner which I got someone in the US to get for me. I've also got a fair few bottling jars, lids and seals. I have used it sufficiently that I know I could use it if I have to but I prefer to store meat by freezing. However if the power was off for a long time and the food in the freezer was about to spoil, I would use the canner to can the meat in stew form - we have a gas hob so I would still be able to cook on the stove top. It's easier to stick a batch of mince in the freezer when times are normal but chilli con carne or beef stew works well in a pressure canner so I reckon I would be able to save a lot of what I have in store
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

We dont get hot weather !! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
We're fully sorted for powercuts apart from the freezer. I sort of think a jenny would be an idea, as it wouldn't need to run constant, just so many minutes per hour. And I'm already paying for the elect to run the freezer - whereas a dehydr. would be an additional item..

:D yeah forgot about your 'summers' :D

I think a dehydrator is worth it if you can either source cheap veg etc or grow it yourself or forage for free of course.

In your situation I would lean towards a genny as you can't grow much surplus, buy a lot of knocked down stuff without a costly round trip or get much free stuff.
But before you look for one I'd have a look at a 12v coolbox which you can run from a deepcell battery as well..depends how much stuff you need to keep frozen??

This option is no good for me for example as we have 3 freezers lol but it may work for you and the RV.

I'm sure someone posted info on this very thread about them.

Ginny sorry to hear lifes a struggle atm hun this weather doesn't help our mood either does it,I fed up with thermal knickers :D
