:D Thanks for that endorsement. We don't have B & M around here but I'm sure I could find a source of refills.

I'm going to get one and encourage the parents to get one. I feel that there's a risk that things might go back to being as unreliable as they were in the seventies but at least we have better outdoorsy kit now. The one I saw was reduced to £14.99.

It's great to get the opinion of people who actually use the stuff and don't have a vested interest in selling you something. I appreciate people taking the time to answer my questions.

We have one, I sometimes use it in my kitchen when I need a gas hob as I can't use the chaphatti pan on the ceramic hob. Also good for power cuts!

There was a picture of this one guy standing in the collapsed lambing shed. The weight of the snow brought it down on the ewes and lambs. He looked so shattered and defeated............ poor bloke.

That was the guy that I mentioned seeing a picture of yesterday that made me want to reach into the screen and hug him. Just an average grey-haired bloke who looked like maybe he was approaching the age where slowing down a bit might be nice, surrounded by skewed sheets of corrugated iron etc. Standing out there in freezing cold and with his head tilted towards the sky. I'm not sure if they'd deliberately tried to pose him in an expression of defiance (it wouldn't surprise me), but the look on his face was one of defeat and just said 'I'm pressing on because I've got no choice. And I'm not due a break in all this rotten luck any time soon, am I?' I think that image will stick with me for as long as the images of the dead animals, and there are so many more like him.

I hope things pick up a bit for them all soon.

Just been reading online newspaper about a superfood beloved of the stars especially Gwyneth Paltrow - and am sure Mardatha will appreciate the irony of the fact that the food in question is k**e!!!

Made a soup from butternut squash, sweet potatoes and red peppers and family loved it - also the sausage Wellington ( sausage meat with softened onions on top, seasoned and wrapped in shortcrust pastry). They do not realise how cheap home made stuff can be and feel quite spoiled.

I agree with the point about Maslow's heirarchy but his idea of self actualisation and achievement was intended to be a bit more spiritual and philosophical than has happened in practice.

There is an idea of Chicenzmehow(can never spell it right) of being "in the flow" which I find very appealing especially when using up ingredients in different ways without a recipe and thinking outside the limits of a problem.

DD's not happy with the ugly clunky look of the portable gas heater but if central heating fails they will be glad of it as well as the hot water bottles, flasks for hot water etc. etc.

Went for a big shop today and surprised how much we spent for milk, cheese, butter. bread, cereal, oil and lots and lots of veg even in A**i but it is still a lot cheaper than elsewhere and will make loads of meals especially as there will be seven of us this weekend.

Got some YS rainbow trout for half price in local supermarket and have shoved it in the freezer.

Don't let the you know what grind you down and let's keep on keeping on.

    Hug to all.

We have one like this as well. Had it for ages. It is handy for picnics /camping as well as power cuts. You can get the refill canisters in lots of places; pound shops, hardware places, camping shops etc.

It is nice and stable too, not easy to knock over.

Woke up to another 5" of the white stuff, I like snow but feel very bad for my neighbours in this village who are trying get through the lambing - they look totally exhausted and so very fed up.
Am sitting here re-thinking my stash. Freezer is full to bursting and it would be so easy to have a power cut in this weather - and rural places like this would be last in line to get reconnected, so it could go off for a while. The record here is 5 days. Not sure if it's wise to keep so much in the freezer. Although if it went off now I could find plastic containers for it all and leave it out in the back garden I suppose :)
  • Just woke up to a drop of the white stuff.

It's almost stopped now, and hardly any has stuck, but looking at the sky, I'd say there's a lot more up there.
  • MAR the idea of loosing all the frozen stores is what prompted me to ask for the dehydrator for christmas. I know it uses electricity to dry everything in the first instance but from then on it just goes into sealed containers and stands in a cupboard and it doesn't matter then if the electric goes off or the length of time it is off for. It is a peace of mind thing, Cheers Lyn xxx.
