  • In some parts of Greece it's like the Wild West. If it's not the Estanomia who are corrupt, it's the Russian !!!!!-types causing all sorts of trouble with prostitution and protection rackets or worse. I understand that it's often not possible to get a permit for business reasons without a family member in local government or a cousin who's a magistrate and the like. Not that we tourists see or hear about much of it.

Sadly, I see less and less to be positive about and I don't like what is happening. We may not have the violence as yet(but time will tell if we get unrest on the streets or we shrug our shoulders and carry on)

We will struggle with the new taxes and changes in the welfare, utility and food prices rising, an economy slowing down again, low wages, people needing to use charities and food banks etc...and following on from WCS's post on the BT though newspapers have their biasness and do scaremonger I came across the following...

Interesting times maybe with finaciancial worries, earthquakes and corruption, food scares etc...but I don't need it...i know I prefer a quiet life the older I become. Doesn't look like its going to happen though...

ETA I do know no one said life was fair or was going to go be easy and we will have our own situations and some of us will be seen as not doing so bad. I try not to compare or judge. Just offer support and a kind word where possible.

Please can I ask a quick question? Where do you get the wick from?

:) I got mine from a H0bbycraft shop but I expect that there are lots of other places. Since then, I have learned how to make wicks and it doesn't seem too tricky, but take a fair bit of drying time.

Using cotton string or twine, steep in borax solution and hang to dry for several days. (2 tbsp salt and 4 tbsp borax to make the solution) Soak for 15 mins and hanf to dry for 5 days.

Dip string into melted wax 3-4 times until it is completely coated, hand to dry for several days. Store the wicks rolled in newspaper.

Mrs LW, I have got Ray Mear's Extreme Survival Series 3 from the library at the moment and the episode "Belarus" shows you how to make charcloth. Essentially you seal natural fibre (cotton or linen) rolled up in a sealed can with a small hole pierced in the lid. Get it good and hot in the fire and then extract and plug the hole with a twig and then the cloth will char in the oxygenless can and become brown and very very ignitable.

I didn't have a suitable can to play with today but have been indulging in a bonfire at the lottie and have cleared up a lot of carp and the place looks the better for it. Charcloth will have to wait until I find a suitable can. RM was using a coffee can, the kind with the lids which push down.

Right, have now got to fetch my once-smoky now-washed duds from the washer and then get on with the tea.

2tonsils, looks like it's fun on Corfu at the moment. I was talking to a woman on Crete back in 2002 who used to work at the airport on a perfume concession and she hated the arrogance of the Russian gangsters' molls towards regular people. She preferred bar work. And another guy remarked drily about these types in the big villas in the hills on Crete with their suited thugs and their big black cars. No one will call them on it to their faces for fear of the conquences but they're mafiosi from Russia.

  • POPS you are positive example to all of us as to how to overcome adversity and get on with life. You've had all the problems to deal with and still you support and encourage everyone else on this thread, you are such a good role model we should all take courage from you and your reactions to lifes trials and tribulations and have the confidence to tackle whatever life has to throw at us in the way you have, it would be a better world and if you can, so can we, Cheers Lyn x.

Though my last post sounded negative I really do think I that I am coming on in leaps and bounds and I believe in time I will continue to see the many things that I should say thanks for.

I like the simple things and as usual I am listening to easy listening music via the internet and Radio 2 as we used to do...and if I can keep an interest in my food and have an odd treat, I'll be doing ok.

You never know more people may actually realise what really matters and what is important. Both my parents not only kept their faith until the end, they also kept their sense of wonder.

Thank you Lyn that was very kind of you and much appreciated:o:)

hello all - I am in much need of some SHTF healing at the moment - our darling bulldog died suddenly of a heart attack on saturday morning, fortunately my husband and I were both with her and tried compressions and nose to mouth but she was gone so quickly. We're plodding around like zombies at the moment trying our best to get through this as we have the house move to orchestrate too but it's an absolute nightmare for us as I am sure you can all understand. Give all those gorgeous pets of yours an extra special cuddle from me and send some love up to our darling princess diva dog at rainbow bridge x keep yer feet warm and dry folks x

This may seem an odd thing to say in a SHTF thread but I think one of our modern day problems is that news spreads faster and better - and as the media has a natural inclination towards sensationalist (often bad) news - while we might be more 'aware', we can lose sight of good and positive things.
I was looking for a new home page to redress the balance and came up with these 'good news' sites (I'm sure there are others as this is an oldish link).
