I think I'm losing it. As this came straight after the reference to loos my first thought (before reading further) was 'What - to pee in?!':eek::eek:
:rotfl:LMAO! Glad it's not just me who doesn't have her brain in gear this morning. Very sensible of her.

I recall the senior fire officer who taught me first aid years ago. Family man with young children. When they went on holiday he took portable smoke detectors to set up in the hotel room and familiarised himself (and the missus) with the fire escape routes and checked that they were usable.

Not so much paranoia but a realistic understanding of how dangerous a fire would be and how important it is to know your way out. I always like to know where the doors are in any building and know lots of little boltholes to get around the urban area if the main streets were impassable for whatever reason.

Today's prep involves prepping the allotment for the coming growing season. Hard to be arrissed when the weather is like this but you can't leave it all til April and hope to achieve much of a result.

Righty-ho, little bit more interwebulating and then I'm outta here for a few hours. Have a good day, everybody. GQ xx

Mardatha you need the (imo) the cooking basics bible!

No longer printed I believe but decent copies available second hand. I bought one years ago for a 'can't cook, won't cook' friend and then tracked down a copy for me :T
Been to an Asian supermarket in town to re-stock on spices. Miles cheaper than those little jars in supermarkets - including the own brand refills. I'll be back to stock up on pulses which are also cheaper. I think pulses are essential to long term stocks.
The only downside is the cooking time (even after soaking) so I cook 3 days worth at a time and use the cooked beans etc in different ways in stews, salads or soups.

I so envy those of you with access to these Palaces of Delight sorrow-smiley-emoticon.gif I do like to have a bit of herbage in my dinners & would like to know more about pulses, but I'm stuck with sms or health shops & we know the  prices in those :o

I was so surprised at how relatively easy it is to make fresh pasta, so that's going to be on my 'to do' list for sometime soon. Muvva is a staunch traditionalist when it comes to food so I can only practise when I'm home for any real length of time. I was too much of a tomboy--still am :p--& was desperate to help DDad with DIY & car maintenance but rarely allowed, & Muvva really wanted to domesticate me & I did everything possible to get out of it :rotfl:
Even I was shocked (probably more saddened) at a news item t'other day showing ladies easily heading for mid-thirties who attend lessons in how to cook from scratch, & not a tattoo or weird piercing in sight before you picture the stereotypical chav :D Then when I thought about it, I guess this is the first generation who were brought up by working mums (either by choice or necessity) so home cooking wasn't very high on their list of priorities.
In a similar vein a few 'surveys' reckon 80%+ of the population regularly eat ready meals....if that is correct, is there any wonder no-one knows what they are eating anymore yellow-smiley-confused-emoticon.gif

On a lighter note, I have concrete written evidence that, should the really-scary-zombie-smiley-emoticon.gif think they've got a hippo-sized walking target when they spot me, they are sooooooo outta luck, cuz I'm bloodless :p Went for (fasting) blood test Thurs & 4 attempts didn't even leave a mark on the cotton wool you have to cover the holes, so back again yesterday--a HUGE effort on my part to go without my morning cuppa two days in a row :o --& finally success on the third attempt. I blame my parents; they've always labelled me as being a difficult bleeder, tho I kinda suspect for completely different reasons :rotfl:

Ha quite the opposite here...last time I went for the blood test for my thyroid the doc filled three tubes in record time and it would not stop bleeding .....he couldn't stop laughing so I asked him what kind of doctor he was, laughing at a patient bleeding to death.....he told me the kind of doctor who knew I wasn't LOL

Have got torrential rain again here and we seem to have sprung a leak on the drain since the earth tremor the other day...will be seeing our insurance man at a social function tonight so going to get him to get the assessor to come out and check it....I think it goes through the wall....and under the marble stairs outside....

I managed to see the asteroid last night with binoculars!!!!:T A very helpful friend sent me a star map which showed me where to find it in our skyline...so it was easy to spot the plough and find it nearby. Watched it for a couple of minutes before I started feeling cold and got a creak in my neck from looking up.....:D

Shoulder is playing up, it started aching in the night , so I have had the sling on all day, pain killing gel on it and a free massage from my OH bless him.

Had a technician out to fix our satellite tv dish and now we have loads of stations instead of ten.....well worth the money. It was scary watching him walk across the wet, slippery roof top though...

Off to a social function tonight with my OH...if this weather keeps up I will be wearing something warm and elegant to it....and waterproof. Should go well with my sling...

Horrible , Baltic weather coming to you next week..probably from about Wednesday...bitterly cold even in the daytime. It looks like an ice age on the weather maps... get yer thermals ready and the fur trapper hats folks, you are going to need them

Almost wish you had not said that as I was luxuriating in seeing an almost blue sky, no snow , rain or ice and believing that eventually Spring may get a beeping move on!!! DH thinks because I was born in August I don't function properly in winter :o(if at all ).

He was born in January and the minute we get into September he moans "It is nearly winter" and then cheers up at beginning of January despite the weather.

Family have gone off to see relatives while I stay at home with convalescent dd as the travelling would be too much for her so having quiet day, Hoovering and tidying bedroom without any interruptions , sorting out books and clothes etc in peace.

Making pizza tonight and also going to watch the new Bond film which just arrived in the post this morning.

I have not been to give blood since the time they pierced an artery -wondered why it suddenly hurt like heck and when I had become such a wimp till nurse went pale and rushed to get her senior:eek:

A wonderful 3 hour walk with the collie in the spring-like sunshine today. I'm doing an online reccy of rural SHTF retreats in Weardale/Teesdale at the mo but thought I should check out my own backyard. It's amazing how many scattered 'homesteads' there are in the hills round here - not twee cottages renovated to within an inch of their lives but places with battered landies and assorted tyres and carp in the yard, places which have never seen a designer kitchen ;). And do they ever come up for sale? Hardly ever because either they've been in the family for ages or because the occupants know they have something priceless - peace, space, privacy, views, fresh air... And when the odd rare property does come up for sale, it will inevitably be for auction with a stratospheric guide price. Sigh... :(
  • Hi,
this argument may be worth following for those possibly impacted by the so-called bedroom tax, particularly in Scotland where houses are designated as, for example, 3 apartment, meaning 3 main rooms (what would be called 2 bedroomed in England,I understand).

My dog loves boiled rice! She could eat great bowls of it forever and ever . But it can make some dogs constipated (including her). Just to be aware.
  • Oh CRAIGY poor little thing, thank goodness he has a Mumi who takes it seriously and knows what to do to make him feel better. Docky has all sorts of intolerances and allergies and I have to cook all his main meals for him or he is just sick all the time. We are lucky to have an independent pet shop in the village and the owner gets in treats and bikkies that he can have so he stays well, not easy though is it? Hope he picks up really quickly, have a good day, Cheers Lyn xxx.
